While the tech world has moved on to using WinRAR and 7-Zip, WinZip Computing is still pushing forward with its classic file archiver utility. 20 years on (WinZip 1.0 was released in April 1991), the company has released WinZip 16.

In today's day and age, a new version means the addition of two new Web services: ZipSend, a web service for file sharing, and ZipShare, a file sharing web application for Facebook. WinZip 16 is available today for $30, or you can download a free trial from winzip.com/ downwz.htm.

ZipSend lets you e-mail up to 50MB of zipped data for free, while ZipSend Pro lets you send up to 2GB per e-mail message. ZipSend includes an e-mail plugin so you don't have to manually copy and paste email addresses from your contact manager into a web page each time you send files. ZipSend detects when a file is too large, uploads it to the ZipSend cloud, and automatically inserts a link to it in your outgoing e-mail.

ZipShare, meanwhile, lets you zip files and post up to 20MB of data directly to Facebook. Sharing photos and videos on Facebook is easy, but this is aimed at those times when you might want to share other types of files. ZipShare lets you share any file with your Facebook friends or privately to Facebook groups that you select. You also get a free ZipShare account that gives you 100MB of file storage space.

Here's the official changelog for version 16:

  • powerful 64-bit zip engine upgrade for maximum zipping speed
  • seamless integration with WinZip's breakthrough file delivery web service, ZipSend.
  • the ability to send very large Zip files (up to 2GB) using ZipSend
  • instant access to WinZip's NEW Facebook app, ZipShare
  • the ability to zip and post any type of file (up to 20MB) to Facebook using ZipShare
  • the ability to zip and write files to Blu-ray Disc directly from the WinZip window
  • the ability to convert other major compression file formats to Zip format
  • extended preview functionality for other major compression file formats
  • the ability to scan and diagnose PC performance issues using WinZip's built-in System Scanner tool

"For more than 20 years, WinZip has been trusted by millions of people to compress and securely transmit their most important files, content and information," said Patrick Nichols, President of WinZip. "Today as more people produce high resolution, multimedia content, they want an easier way to share a wide range of files with colleagues, family and friends. With WinZip 16 and the introduction of ZipSend and ZipShare, we're providing even faster, more efficient ways for people to share their most important data, whether they're sending files through e-mail or sharing them on Facebook."

These features aren't exactly a game changer, but WinZip has a solid brand that means they don't have to be. As long as Corel, WinZip's parent company, keeps releasing new versions on a regular basis, many people will keep upgrading.

Wow is there anything else they can shoehorn in, to make it just that bit more bloated?

Hey this is cool. Just download and and run the program I sent you. It won't hurt your PC, as my computer was just fine. Just run it, it is very funny...I can almost hear the hackers laughing now.

  • WinZip 16 Pro

Purchased WinZip 16 pro which advertised the ability to send large files to 2GB, what they dont tell you until you go to use it is that you have to buy WinZip SEND PRO at $9.95 per month and you need to also purchase WinZip Courier at $24.95 and the receiver of the the file has to buy the extraction program at $49.95. WinZip have lost the plot. Find another File compression software company. If anyone sends you a zip file tell them to print and post remember the old way!!!!
