Would you use a ZDNet Facebook app?

By | December 2, 2011, 11:56am PST

Summary: All this talk about a Facebook’s Open Graph news apps has got me thinking: should ZDNet develop its own Facebook news app, and if we did, would you use it?

On the one hand, Facebook Open Graph news apps have major problems, especially if you ask the technology geeks and nerds that make up the readership of websites like ZDNet. On the other hand, millions of Facebook users have already embraced the Open Graph for reading and sharing news; the results aren’t surprising, but they are still impressive.

With the talk of the effectiveness and usefulness of Facebook news apps continuing, both users and publishers are trying to figure out where they stand. So I’m asking you, my readers: would you use a ZDNet Facebook app? Please vote in the poll below:

Would you use a ZDNet Facebook app?

I want to emphasize that I have no control over whether or not ZDNet develops its own Facebook news app, nor can do I have control whether or not Facebook is integrated into the ZDNet website. I have no knowledge of whether or not ZDNet is considering doing either the former or the latter. In short, this poll is not an official survey: I’m merely curious to see what my readers think of the idea.

Nope. I use FB to keep in touch with relatives and friends both close by and far flung - no games and no apps. I have those on my iPhone and Fascinate.

Hell and No.

I already hate the "5 friends have read this interesting-sounding article" and then being told I have to give the Facebook application (typically Yahoo News) permission to my data.

Copy & Paste the URL's, people! Link me to the original news article.

In the case of ZDNet, I'm OK if they track what I'm reading based on my login ID. But I don't want them to have access to info about my schooling, marital status, annual income, or anything about my Facebook friends. I also don't want Facebook to gather even more specific/identifying data about me based on app-provided news articles (eg political leanings, religious beliefs, hobbies).

As a side frustration with those "friends have recently read..." blurbs, the news stories are generally not current; they are often a week old. For ZDNet stuffs, I want to know what's happening NOW, not be a week behind on worthwhile stuff like the current Carrier IQ hullabaloo.

I already have a ZDnet app/link/..... so why would I need this exactly?

No, I wouldn't. In fact, I don't really use Facebook apps at all anymore, they're just a waste of time.

No, they're not really all that impressive. In today's world of a hyper-connected culture and everybody following everybody else, it's not so impressive anymore to hit the millions mark. Millions of people probably do things like download fart apps to their phones.
I don't use Facebook except to get to group memberships. My page is blank. Facebook is a huge waste of time and energy unless something really important needs to be supported or nixed. Ergo, I wouldn't use a ZDnet app.
