Google+ numbers would be higher ... if it worked

By | January 20, 2012, 1:23pm PST

Summary: Is Google’s expansion starting to break key products? My G+ and Gmail have been unstable and nearly unusable for months.

Much has been written about Larry Page, CEO of Google, revealing what look to be good numbers on rising G+ usage.

Mr Page said at the analyst call on Thursday that G+ has 90 million users and that 60% are active daily.

Many observers have questioned if those numbers are accurate but, I bet the daily engagement could very well be higher… if the damn thing worked.

I’ve had constant troubles with G+ for several months. I keep adding the same people to the same circles time and again. It often will not let me share anything.

Other Google products are failing too. My Gmail is virtually unusable because it delivers my mail more than an hour late, and it won’t autocomplete addresses which means I have to search for the right one and copy and paste it in. It’s tedious. Google Contacts doesn’t work at all, completely blank and won’t let me add people.

I’ve tried repeatedly to get help from Google to fix this — nothing.

I’ve seen frustrated posts from others with similar problems, also not able fix it or find anyone at Google to help them.

I know that Google wants desperately to have a large social network but it clearly doesn’t get it, because it doesn’t use social networks in providing customer support! If you aren’t doing it, you won’t get it — this is core to any company’s culture.

For example, Apple is a company that is notoriously bad at being active in social media and I would say that this is a primary reason why it has been so bad at creating a social network (Ping).

Google will fail at G+ and other social network ventures if it doesn’t fully engage in those networks, and others, with its customers and users. You have to be in it to get it. That’s how things work and there’s no short cuts.

Google, please fix my G+ and Gmail! This has been going on for months! Cherry-on-top please!

Will Google notice my pleas here? But not my constant requests on Google support forums?

If I’m having serious problems with Google products I’m pretty sure there must be many others because my use is dirt simple, it is not extraordinary in any way. And Google isn’t interested in fixing my problem, nor I’m assuming, that of others in the same boat.

That’s a warning sign, imho, of a potentially larger issue within Google.

Actually, I have been using the internet as long as it has existed. But, I have also worked in environments where people have succumbed to temptation to make money leaking information.

The worst problem with Google is that they have such a concentration of information in their profiles. And they gain much of that information surreptitiously. After all, they started off making money through profiling users' searches. Now they scan your emails for keywords and encourage people to use their scripts, like Google Analytics, on websites. Not to mention the information they can derive when you activate your Android device. At least Facebook is based on information you give them. And that is what Google wants from services like Google+.
and they are losing focus as well. Android is a mess too...they've got their work cut out.

Get a better browser???

Probably you are using IE6!!! I have not seen anyone else complain about Gmail and Google contact. Add the following to your TODO list: "Download and Install a better browser."
@hari_g@...
I use FireFox and I shall make the same complaint about GMail. My recommendation, switch back to the "Old Look". The "New Look" is badly broken.

Personally, I don't believe that 90 million people are actually using +, I have been on there 3 times, once because I wanted to see it, twice because I was trying to click Search but hit Myname+ instead, because I can't get rid of that now because Google is forcing me to be a member of their social community against my will. It's no wonder their stocks are falling with business practices like this. Bing, you just need to get a little better, especially in the News part, and I am done with Google for life.
A good company should have great customer support.

@Tom Foremski...I would look for other problem areas. I have not experienced any of the issues you described, and would be very upset if I did. I use gmail as my primary and would notice any service problems very quickly. As far as G+ goes, I'm still not sure what its ultimate potential is but right now I do use it daily without the problems you described.
It just looks that you are telling about any other email or facebook instead of gmail or google+.
Let me tell you one thing I am from India where network bandwidth is still a huge issue but still My gmail and google+ works like butter....

every time i log into gmail it's counted as a G+ session ?? Would love to live in your world Larry. Must be way cool to think everyone else is a dummy.
Oh here we go, another Arm Chair QB trying to tell the company with the fastest growing Social Network how bad they're blowing it!

Maybe you can write a column about how Apple Blew it with the iPod or MS with Windows!
Like others who have replied to your polemic, I have absolutely no problems with any Google product. Perhaps you should check your system for malware or see if your ISP is having problems.
"My Gmail is virtually unusable because it delivers my mail more than an hour late, and it won???t autocomplete addresses which means I have to search for the right one and copy and paste it in."

Email simply isn't designed to be a real time service. Even before I used gmail, I'd often have to deal with late emails. It's a best effort system, and if things go badly at some server, your email may be delayed or may be required to be resent. Not to mention the ever-increasing amount of spam means that most of a server's processing power is wasted on unwanted emails.

Not to mention there are a lot of people who check their emails only once a day. So your email may not even be read for hours. Some people use things like push email, but many people don't.

As far as autocomplete, it works fine here. I suggest the issue may be with your setup, rather than gmail itself. Are you using NoScript or something similar?
Maybe Google's snooping servers were down so they had to read all your emails manually. Don't worry; I'm sure they might fix the problem right away at some point maybe.
The world should consider itself lucky. Many nerds are caught up with everything Google because it seems technically innovative. But, they forget that Google makes all their money from advertising and all their apps and services serve one purpose: spy on their users to build more complete profiles to sell to advertisers. The less one uses Google the better off one will be when all those Google profiles get leaked.
@jorjitop

With all due respect, with thinking like that, you should just stop using the internet period.
