More evidence of the SoDOMM effect in social media

Summary: Social media was once considered a potential competitor to the dominance of mass media in society. Now it's an amplifier rather than a challenger.

When I first started out as a journalist-blogger in 2004, social media was widely expected to become an important alternative to the gatekeepers of mass media, an army of citizen journalists would take on the dominant powers that shape ideas and influence commerce.

That didn't happen. And while citizen journalists in the form of bloggers are around, they are a relatively small group and they rarely produce original stories. Instead of the revolutionary effect expected, social media has become a distributor and an amplifier of mass media, and not a challenger to the establishment. It's an effect I've dubbed SoDOMM, (Social Distribution Of Mass Media).

Mvelase Peppetta, points to Facebook's release of its top 40 shared news stories in 2011, which demonstrates the dominance of the SoDOMM process:
