Case-Mate leaks iPhone 5 images, confirms iPhone 4S

Summary: Did Case-Mate's "oopsie" landing page reveal Apple will be launching both an iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S, or is it just more red herring?

SHARE:

Now you see them, now you don't. Accessories maker Case-Mate got a little too excited about its upcoming iPhone 5 case lineup by posting and then abruptly pulling product shots and details from its website earlier today, as first reported by BGR. But the landing page that replaced the product shots is just as revealing, or maybe not.

Genuine mistake or not, Case-Mate just provided the world with the first glimpse of the iPhone 5, which Apple is widely expected to introduce within the "coming weeks", perhaps even at Macworld Asia, according to the accessory company. Judging from the shape of these cases, it would appear the iPhone 5 will have a tapered edge and aluminum back like the iPad 2. But as TechCrunch pointed out, Apple is not known to provide dummy devices ahead of launch so these photos are likely just renderings and not actual photos of the phone and case.

Further, on the landing page that replaced images of the iPhone 5 cases, Case-Mate makes a point of listing both the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S as separate devices when asking visitors to sign up for updates on upcoming cases. It goes on to explain it has "inside resources" with details about the upcoming phones and reiterated the following rumors, which could lend credence to these speculations:

The rumors are [the] new iPhone 5 will feature a completely different form factor than its predecessor. Wider and thinner, the redesigned device features an extended home button. The screen size could see an increase to 4 inches.

Also included in the rumors is that the iPhone 5 will be an A5 dual-core processor, similar to the one used in the iPad 2. It will also be equipped with an 8 mega-pixel camera, wireless charging and iOS 5, which features iCloud portable storage capabilities.

The latest report is that the iPhone 5 will be available on all major carriers across the globe, including China Mobile, which has 600 million subscribers. In addition, it will be available in black and white with 16GB and 32 GB options. Insiders expect an early October launch.

On whether Apple will be introducing an iPhone 5 and 4S, or just one or the other, Case-Mate's sources are saying both:

From our inside resources, it appears that Apple will be indeed launching both an iPhone 5 and an iPhone 4S in early October. The speculation indicates that the iPhone 4S will feature the same form factor as the iPhone 4 but will be upgraded with the latest technology, including the A5 dual-core processor and 8 mega-pixel camera.

It's highly possible for an accessory maker to have advance knowledge of unannounced devices, at least their dimensions and things like the location of buttons and cameras, especially for a company as established as Case-Mate. Of course, with the official announcement of the new phones just around the corner, it's hard to believe any and everything about the next-gen iPhones unless it's coming from the horse's mouth.

      @seriously3456 Did you read the article? Casemate is selling 4s and iphone 5 cases. Either Casemate is in the habit of selling cases for non-existant phones, or they have inside knowledge of iphone 5/4s coming down the pipe.

    It will be interesting when Apple releases a phone you don't need a case for. Is this boring iteration going to be any less fragile?

        @deusexmachina???? I'll explain why. Take a look at the iPhone 4. You have to use a case with that or you will have issues with the antenna. Do you remember all that? That's why Apple gives away cases for the iPhone 4.

        @Rhonin
        No, I am asking for examples of reasons from someone who has actually used an iPhone4, not someone, such as yourself, who just reads hype on the internets, and regurgitates it online like they know what they are talking about.

        @hforman

        Bull. Antenna issue? Really?!? You make this categorical statement, as if the issue were ubiquitous, when, in fact, if you knew anything about what you were talking about, you would know that almost no one had ANY issue with the antenna, and the whole thing was blown WAY out of proportion, especially considering that signal attenuation is experienced by ANY phone, and even occurs WITH a case.
        You do NOT have to use a case with the iP4, and many people don't. You simply don't know what you are talking about.

        @deusexmachina???? The antenna grip of death is real. I support 50+ iPhone 4 and if you grip them so the palm is covering the antenna then the bars start to disappear. Personally I have a HTC Aria from AT&T and I get a little bit of that when I'm dealing with a real weak signal out in the hinterlands, but nowhere close to what I see with the iPhone 4.

        @boomchuck1
        They call it the grip of death because you have to grip it very tightly, in a unnatural position, to get the antenna attenuation. And even then, most people do not see it.
        Your example of 50+ people is more than trumped by the chorus of people online claiming the opposite, and the continued satisfaction rate (highest in the industry) for both the phone and the company, and the very low return rate (among the lowest in the industry). I.e., bull.

      • RE: Case-Mate leaks iPhone 5 images, confirms iPhone 4S

        @rhonin??Correct, the iPhone 4 does have glass on both sides. Since you brought it up want to explain why the 4 had fewer insurance claims for broken glass than the 3GS over the same period of time after release?

      • RE: Case-Mate leaks iPhone 5 images, confirms iPhone 4S

        @hforman@... Yeah, I remember the overblown antennagate issue, what's your point because you are wrong. First I know for a fact that I don't have to use a case on my iPhone 4 and it works great no matter how I hold it. Second Apple does not give cases away with the iPhone 4. They did give away the "band" temporarily last year during the antennagate dust up but that was only temporary.??

    I don't care how great the phone is wireless carrier service just plain ole sucks! Just think, you get to rent a small, hand held, sorta functional, limited use computer, that allows you to talk to people in places where you shouldn't (like the library), play games in the line at fake-mart, look cool at moon bucks, geeze all this for an initial outlay and about 150.00 per month. Cost of ten year ownership, about $20,000? Wow, what an investment, no wonder our economy is upside down!

    • No, our economy is upside down because people like

      you think they should be telling people what to spend their money on. Result: billions of dollars flushed down the toilet into nowhere technologies like Solyndra.

      @Rodglaze Where are you getting your figures? is that some of that "Enron math"?

  • RE: Case-Mate leaks iPhone 5 images, confirms iPhone 4S

    That camera cut-out is really sloppy-looking. Why did they make it 11 times larger than it needed to be?

    • RE: Case-Mate leaks iPhone 5 images, confirms iPhone 4S

      @heymatthew I completely agree. That was the first thing that I noticed about the case/phone. I couldn't tell from the picture, but I'm hoping it's because of a light sensor or something. Otherwise someone has an odd taste for looking glamorous.

    • RE: Case-Mate leaks iPhone 5 images, confirms iPhone 4S

      @heymatthew Possibly because it has a wider field of view? You have to make sure the case clears it all, even allowing for a bit of "shifting" within the case.

    • RE: Case-Mate leaks iPhone 5 images, confirms iPhone 4S

      @heymatthew

      No. Not Enron math. Enron math is: $0 + $0 = $5,000,000,000. ;-)

      Actually @Rodglaze math is ok. Let me explain: $150 * 12 months * 10 years = $18,000. That is just the usage part. But if you get a new phone every year at $200 per phone: $200 per phone * 10 years = $2,000. So, $18,000 usage plus $2,000 for each iPhone iteration = $20,000. Ok, you will actually pay more because of the early termination fees.

      You are correct, if you change every two years (to eliminate the early termination fee and in your 10th year you should have the iPhone 13 and the 10th year will see release of the iPhone 15, but you can stop at the iPhone 13 at the end of 10 years. That will be 5 iPhones starting from the iPhone 5 in 2011 and ending with the iPhone 13 in 2021, so that would only be $1,000 thus $18,000 + $1,000 will be $19,000.

      For at least this year, $150 per month is probably about average. I had the original iPhone in 2007 and got the iPhone 3Gs in 2009 and will get the iPhone 5 in 2011. Since I had started with the unlimited data plan (that is all they had at the time) with AT&T (don't argue the carrier with me that is not the point of this post) I can continue to have the unlimited plan under the iPhone 5. I have two other phones (wife and daughter), have unlimited text on all phones, but minimum minutes (500 minutes), for $140 per month. Just the iPhone part is $120 per month. The other phones are not smartphones so that is $10 per month per phone. Combined we use about 300 minutes per month, so I have racked up quite a bit of rollover minutes. But for those who have to get a non unlimited data plan because you started wit the iPhone 3Gs or later, this can start to rack up quickly if you use Skype or Vonage. And/Or if you have to increase your talk minutes.
