IDC: Android to be No. 2 mobile OS by 2013

By | January 26, 2010, 10:33am PST

Summary: Google’s Android mobile operating system will become the second most-popular mobile platform by 2013, according to a new report.

Google’s Android mobile operating system will become the second most-popular mobile platform by 2013, according to a new report by IDC.

Who will continue to rule the cell phone roost? Symbian, according to the research firm.

By 2013, IDC forecasts that worldwide shipments of smartphones will surpass 390 million units, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 20.9 percent.

“Mobile operating systems have become the key ingredient in the highly competitive mobile device market. Although the overall look and feel of the device will still play an important role in the buying process, the wrong choice of operating system coupled with an awkward user interface can mean the difference between success and failure,” said Stephen D. Drake, vice president, Mobility and Telecom, in prepared remarks.

Key takeaways from the report:

  • Symbian will remain the No. 1 mobile OS worldwide, thanks to Nokia’s strength outside the U.S.
  • Android will experience the fastest growth of any mobile operating system: from 690,000 units in 2008 to 68.0 million units by 2013 (that’s 150.4 percent compound annual growth).
  • Linux and webOS handsets “will struggle.” Android will suck most of the life out of other Linux platforms and Palm’s webOS, despite steady growth, will be limited by restrained deployment and availability of devices across multiple carriers.

No mention of BlackBerry overlords RIM in the announcement, but judging by Android’s growth, that’s not a good sign for them, either.

Either way, there’s no way development market can sustain so many different platforms. And with Symbian (and Nokia) resting on its innovation laurels, it’s no surprise Android stands to benefit.

The IDC report is called “Worldwide Mobile OS 2009-2013 Forecast and Analysis.”

  • You do know that Android runs on Linux...
    don't you?

I suppose that what you meant to say was: " All Other Linux distros and webOS handsets “will struggle.”"

    Am I right?

  • Wait, so Apple comes in third or worst?
I guess the "mighty" iPhone still irrelevant on the global scale.

  • Don't worry, iSuppli has WinMo #2 in 2013.
For 4,500/copy, I will make up a report that says anything the commissioner requests.

The industry predicted the fall of iPod to irrelevance with the introduction
of the Zune (it did do better than the Nexus, however).

  • IDC forecast
and gartner is predicting that winmo will be no. 3 in 2013.
WTF. why they insist on not looking at the actual trends
(nokia, winmo, palm = down, apple, rim, android = up) is
    beyond me.

my prediction: android will be first, apple second and rimm
third in a consolidated smartphone market in 2013. nokia,
winmo and palm all having meaningless market share by
    then.

  • I pretty much agree on your three pick.
I am not really sure on the order. Google has LOTS and LOTS of work
to do on their SDK before they are even close to competitive with
    Apple's SDK.

That really holds back developer adoption (that and they are not
    making much money selling apps).

Google has to do something about open = free. All you have to do is
look at peoples disappointment when they expected Google to charge
(perish the thought) for the Nexus.

So at this point, RIM and Apple both have better business plans.
    Google is floundering a bit.

  • RE: IDC: Android to be No. 2 mobile OS by 2013
First, Gartner's analysts said Android will be #2 by 2012 and now IDC is saying something similar.

It's hard to argue with the sheer magnitide of Android distribution potential. It won't be one single phone model that take Android to #2 but rather all the different phone choices across all wireless carriers.

    Good stuff.

Google spyware will be everywhere. Anybody who values privacy should avoid Android and any other Google product or service.

As the expected-to-be-announced Apple tablet is purported to use the iPhone OS, I'd take this pronouncement with a large grain of salt.

Not making predictions one way or the other - only that Apple can be a game changer.
