In wake of Circuit City's demise, Best Buy rivals gain share

Summary: Amazon and Walmart are gaining mindshare versus Best Buy in the race to be the first place for consumers to shop for electronic devices, according to a new report.

Amazon and Walmart are gaining mindshare versus Best Buy in the race to be the first place for consumers to shop for electronic devices, according to a new report.

According to a Retrevo Pulse survey of 1,019 randomly selected people, consumers stuck with Best Buy for electronics purchases this holiday season, but consumers' perception of where to buy electronics shifted in Amazon's favor in a year-over-year comparison.

Amazon increased its mind share by 30 percent compared to last year, from 11 percent to 15 percent, according to the study. Amazon's gain appears to have been at Best Buy's expense, Retrevo writes.

More interesting takeaways from the mindshare study:

  • 42% believe Walmart has the lowest prices; 33% say Amazon; 25% say Best Buy.
  • 44% believe Best Buy has the best selection. 41% say Amazon; 15% say Walmart.
  • The reality is different: Walmart grabbed 4 points of actual market share across the board, and was the only reseller in the study to gain market share in actual purchases.

  • Radio Shack?

    Are you serious?

They are an electronics store; albeit a pointless one. One that sells overpriced and outdated merchandise

    Radio Shack but not NewEgg?

    • NewEgg has been added to the poll.

      Apologies for the omission.

  • Umm what about newegg. Tiger direct is second to them in terms of sales.

I chose tiger direct, only because i shop at compusa when buying locally.

Yet your chart shows Amazon gaining 4 points and Walmart
LOSING 1 point. Which is correct?

    • Re: Chart versus reality

The chart at the top illustrates mindshare.

The quote you write with regard to is about actual
market share -- that's products sold -- not
      mindshare.

I am suprised they didn't put buy.com on there.

There also should have been mention of the fact that Circuit City, along with CompUSA are both still in operation, under new management. I don't know if that happens to be TigerDirect, or a holding company that owns Tiger Direct. If you go to all their sites, though, you'll see they're the same with slightly diferent graphics.

    • Thats because

buy.com is part of the entire ebay boycott mess.
eBay used buy.com to manipulate the number of listings starting in Feb. 08, to push all the little sellers out, and bring in major corporations, to replace them. Buy.com listed 40% of ALL items in eBay's books category. Yet sells only 2.39% of items listed.
Of course, Im not sure how this is profitable for eBay, since they have waived ALL their listing fees (in Feb. 08, that would have been over 25 MILLION dollars over a 90 day period; IF buy would ahve been charged ONLY a dime-- eBay's lowest listing fee {for books charged under $9.99} but, obviously much higher, since they had items listed that would have cost $4). Yet, somehow eBay thinks THIS model is MORE profitable than allowing small sellers to list?
Ok, so, maybe that isnt why buy.com was left off; but, that's why i'm glad it was.
Plus, from what I have seen from buy, their customer service is not very stellar. I'd rather shop at Radio Shack. Buy can go bye, for all i care.

    COSTCO! No more to say!
    Woodlands
    • Yes!

Costco or Sam's are both the way to go on electronics. 90 day return policy? And, you get your full cash back, unlike BB, where anything over $300 gets mailed to you? And, possibly a 15% restocking fee deducted?
14 day return policies on computers is not even enough time to get a computer out of the box.

  • I buy at multiple places

The poll should have allowed for more than one choice. I have bought electronics at TigerDirect.com, Amazon.com, Best Buy (and bestbuy.com), Dell.com, just for the Xmas holidays.
    Licinio
    • Multiple Places, also

I selected Best Buy as they have opened a local store (moved into an old CompUSA slot), but in the last few months, I've actually bought at Best Buy, Amazon, Adorama, and NewEgg. It just depends upon how soon I need it, price, and how familiar I am with the product.

  • RE: In wake of Circuit City's demise, Best Buy rivals gain share

CompUSA and CircuitCity are both gone from my area, which is a bummer. Both were 1/4 the drive time compared to Wal-Mart or BestBuy. Honestly though I check buy.com before anywhere else, no matter what the product. Amazon is usually next.

I was surprised eBay wasn't listed?

    • Amazon rocks over the evil empire

Ok, Im have a huge axe to grind against both buy.com and ebay. Buy, because they helped eBay undermine the community trust, when they helped eBay manipulate listing numbers, by listing 40% of all the items listed in the books category. (Despite the boycott, thats still a huge number; that's a huge number for anywhere, when you're talking one entity).

Now that said and done, does that mean I'm wrong? No. Watch:
Suppose you buy an electronics item from eBay, and for some reason, you decide to buy the same item from Amazon. There's a chance you'll get great service from both sellers. There's a chance you'll run into problems from both sellers.
Now, assuming you are a legitimate buyer (explanation later) Amazon covers both the seller and buyer with A-Z protection. How this works is, you choose what credit card you wish to pay with, and you pay Amazon, who then pays the buyer.
With eBay, you are pretty much forced to pay via PayPal (eBay owns PP) who the seller now has to pay an addition 3% to PP (and eBay) and then you have to go through this huge dispute and HOPE PP and eBay side with you.
Of course, if you are an illigitimate buyer, then, you know all the loopholes, and you will be able to slip through for well over a year, defrauding honest sellers of their deserved money (and, no this is not bitterness, although there should be. I contacted Lorrie and asked her to review a member who for 13 months defrauded sellers. She was removed within a week. But, the point is, sellers complained for 13 months about her, and eBay allowed her to continually defraud sellers, until I intervened on their behalf).
(disclosure time: I head up the largest internet ebay boycott website; and this member is just one of far too many -- one is really too many-- who has used eBay policy to scam people). So, this is how and why I have intervened.

Something seems amiss here. What are they really measuring? The article states Walmart actually gained 4% market share, but the Graph shows they dropped market share (or whatever they were measuring by) from 15% in 2008 to 14% in 2009! How do you drop 1% and yet still gain 4% market share. Even New Math doesn't work like that.

I buy from New Egg, Fry's, or sometimes Think Geek!!! Only the uninformed buy at Best Buy. That being said they need to buy their electronics from Best Buy. Best Buy provides them with the "security" they need. :o)
