Intel is getting into the holiday spirit by cutting the costs on some of its pricey solid-state drives.
New suggested retail prices include a 40GB Intel X25-V “boot drive" for $99, the X25-M Mainstream 80GB SATA SSD for $199 and a 160GB capacity for $415.
Furthermore, Intel has added a new member to the line-up: the Intel X25-M 120GB SSD option. With an MSRP of $249, the company dubs this drive as the "best dollar-per-GB value in the Intel X25-M SSD line."
All of these can be found now at Best Buy, Fry's Electronics, Amazon, NewEgg and other online tech retailers.

RE: Intel slashes prices on solid-state drives for holidays; adds 120GB option
Unfortunately I do not think that will happen for XP. However, I do believe that both Intel and OCZ have tools to wipe the data left on the SSD that is not needed periodically to help avoid the slow downs caused by the data not being cleaned at the time of deletion. Remember XP is end of life and on extended support so no new features are really going to be added aside from critical and security updates.
I realize that, but.....
my family has 4 notebooks with 1.5-2GHz Core/Core2 dual core CPU's and 2GB RAM. The notebooks run a mixture of XP, Linux and Vista, Linux in dual boot. Most of them do not need large HDDs. From what I have read, a SDD is a fabulous upgrade to these notebooks. When their spinning disks get tired, an SSD would apparently be one sweet upgrade, probably better than a new notebook with a standard HDD.

Not trying to cause a debate I was just trying point out that I think companies like Intel and OCZ which both make very good SSD drives have utilities for users of XP. Maybe even for linux.
Don't worry.
I was just enjoying the chat. :-)

Waiting for better XP support? If you are going to stay in the "stone ages" then I really don't think you deserve one!
Reading comprehension
I did not say I was waiting for XP support. I said "I do not think MS will support TRIM on XP, but some device suppliers may."
The rest of you post is simply not worthy of a response.

Reliability of SSDs is still in the air
So right now reliability SSDs is a question that is still in the air.
Can you provide reference to those reports?

Seems Rachel needs to check her facts
Not so. BestBuy, Frys, NewEgg do not have the 120GB SSD drive. I was only able to find it at Amazon for a whopping $279 - much more than the stated MSRP.
