Israeli authorities confiscating incoming iPads at airports

By | April 15, 2010, 2:29am PDT

Summary: The iPad might seem like one of the most travel-friendly gadgets available now, but it’s not welcome everywhere yet. TSA might not be so strict about the Apple slate computer, but Israeli airport officials are going so far as confiscating all iPads entering the country.

The iPad might seem like one of the most travel-friendly gadgets available now, but it’s not welcome everywhere yet. TSA might not be so strict about the Apple slate computer, but Israeli airport officials are going so far as confiscating all iPads from travelers entering the country with them.

Apparently the source of the problem is that the Wi-Fi broadcast levels emitting from the iPad are too “low-powered” for use in Israel as well as Europe. At least 10 iPads have been reported as confiscated so far, but they aren’t kept away from their owners forever as they are returned upon departure. However, iPad owners have to pay a fee for each day its kept in custody or pay to have it shipped home.

I haven’t read anything about iPads being banned from any other country, but it’s quite an interesting stance regarding performance standards. Does anyone find it too strict? Or has anyone had a problem traveling with their iPad yet?

I'm ashamed at this nonsense

I live in Israel. And I feel ashamed for it, every time I read things like this.... Or the occasion a few months ago when a laptop was shot into pieces at the Israel-Egypt border at Eilat.
when your neighbors like to put bombs in everything to see how many
jews they can kill.

The story has nothing to do with bombs and such.

It seems the Israelis are confiscating the iPads because they are too "low powered".

That's an unusual reason to say the least.

The Wifi is too weak...?
Wolfie2K3 15th Apr 2010
Er.. OK.. I suppose that means their packet sniffers can't easily eavesdrop on wifi conversations with a router without compromising the fact they're doing so.

Don't really blame them for doing something like that given the relations with their neighboring countries.

That also kinda explains a couple of things. Like why Apple is really holding back the international launch. And why wifi sucks rotten eggs on the units already sold here.

Anybody that tries to survive out of sync with all, or almost all, of his neigbhours, is DOOMED to go down in the end.

The US lifeline was USD 15 billion per year already back in 1991, not the official USD "three or four" billion.

How long is that gonna last in today's global financial environment?

If you're a Palestinian, you likely mean any Jewish nationalist.

If you're an outsider, you may mean either or both.

The article is entitled "Israeli...", so we can assume neighbors would be Palestine, Jordon, Syria and Lebanon. All of which, with the possible exception of Jordon, are dedicated to the destruction of Israel.

I hope that clears it up for you.

Why only Ipads
Ole Rellik 19th Apr 2010
If your logic held water then the Isrealis would certainly confiscate all Laptops, not just Ipads. You can get a lot more c4 in a 17" laptop, than you can in an Ipad. Try thinking the subject through. They are only confiscating Ipads!! Why???

I just find completely idiotic that a pad or
any computer is seize at a airport ... Its
plain stupid it have nothing to do with Israel or Jewish people or nothing .... if
they would have said .... Britain seize ipad
at airport the comment would be the same ....

If i would choose not to go in Israel
territories because of jewish action on Palestinian or Lebanon or about the thousand
crime committed by Israel condone by international laws . I dont think that i
need the ipad to make that choice . I just
have to check history.

you call racist everything that you hear or see
if someone say or do anything at all you end
up as a antisemitic period great .....

you know what say all that you want history
will write itself and will see how Israel
will be categorized.....

IndredKold 15th Apr 2010
You should really read up on the history of Israel. The League of Nations more or less created Israel after World War I following Britain's conquest of Palestine. In 1948 Israel declared independence and that's really when all hell broke loose. Read the rest yourself if you are so inclined. It kinda makes one wonder why the Brits et al were so keen on helping the Jews form a nation...hmm.

I mean they were so holocausted over half a century ago, why shouldn't the Israelis be overlooked for odd incidents of petty larceny?

True, Vietnam lost 4,000,000 in the 1960s and 1970s and haven't worn it on their sleeve one bit, but then again, why would they?

There is an issue of bad translation at stake here.

It would be boring to go into it here but you can see details at The Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2002/jan/12/books.guardianreview5.

In short, the 72-virgin story is just cheap chaff.

Still, I can't help thinking of the cartoonist who has this beaming beardie standing befor Heaven's gatekeeper, who's turning his head upwards and asking God: "This guy says he died protesting the (anti-Islamic) Danish cartoons... Does he still get the 72 virgins?"

Have a nice day, folks!

Um, in Europe there were substantive grounds for "anti-Semitism": from the 1500s forward, Jews were prominent in shipping between Europe, Africa, South Asia and the Far East.

In some cases, the return of merchant vessels from abroad were followed by plagues.

As a result, European locals developed the mathematical equation: returning Jewish-owned vessels = arrival of new plague.

Some (if not most) of medieval Europe's finest physicians were Jews, but the merchants comings & goings really screwed the pooch.

antisematism in european history
CaptOska 15th Apr 2010
antisematism in european history has many more causes than shipping, which seems trivial to me. secular reasons include the prominence of Jews in lending banks (Usury being a Christian sin at the time), and the very real papal dictates blaming the death of Jesus on the Jews (remember "passion of the christ"?) being one example of and excuse for religious persecution.

Joseph & Mary were both direct descendants of King David, so the kid (irrespective of any Holy Ghost meddling in there between Mary's legs) had a real claim to the throne of Judea -- but only if the kid could evict the Romans, which he failed to do. Big time.

In the end, Jesus failed because the leaders of the Jewish community were doing quite well under Roman rule, thank you very much, and had no interest in a revolutionary government under Jesus and all the unpredictables of such a new political and economic equation.

Usury is terribly Christian: just look at the rates you're paying for your Visa & Mastercards. Under French law, usury starts at 22% but the USA and other countries don't cap it so low. Anyhow, you always add multiple sorts of fees. Yes, um, well, I don't want to talk about Islamic banking principles, which really ban usury in a ******** way.

And that's why the Jews rebelled BIG time less than 100 years later...

Eh... Your statement makes no sense. Seems to me that if things are going so well for everyone there wouldn't have been a need for a revolt that got crushed by Roman heels.

Remember Masada? The burning of the temple in Jerusalem? Those were POST JC.

Missing premise
shadfurman 15th Apr 2010
I don't agree with the assumed premise that
Jesus ever wanted too or tried too reform the
government. His beef wasn't with the government
it was with the Church, and he didn't even
reform the Church, he just started a new one.

I don't see how your assumptions are any more
accurate than if I said that YOU failed at
achieving an orgasm in space (assuming you've
never tried).

It is an interesting perspective however and
not completely improbable. (Given Christ
actually lived)

for the death of Jesus, Jesus and most of his

Christianity for the inquisition. Whether your
religious or not, the logic doesn't really follow.

Let's see now. Intels' cpu design & fabs are located in Israel,

Intel isn't the only CPU manufacturer in Isreal.
Intel has fabs in the U.S. and China
Intel manufactures ARM chips also
There are companies with ARM fabs in Israel
Many devices have ARM chips
Most ARM devices are not banned from Israel
Other speculation is more probable

misinformation
fredd1 17th Apr 2010
The argument that Intel may have fabs
elsewhere or that Isreal may have other
significant cpu fabs (which I doubt) is
immaterial. Intels' major mobile & desktop
cpu design efforts now reside in Isreal.
Intel may have acquired some ARM
licenses from time to time (strongARM &
Xscale come to mind), but most of those
were ceded to Marvell some time ago.
While they may still hold some minor IP
licenses from ARM for some imbedded
system designs, they certainly have no
major affiliation with them. (They tend to
roll their own).
ARM is not a chip maunufacturer so no
devices have ARM chips - ARM designs
yes -but not hardware.
Almost all smartphones use some variant
of ARM designs so trying to imbargo them
would be impractical.
The ARM-cortex9A design (the core of the
iPad A4) is serious competition for
Intels'ATOM cpu ( quite superior in fact)
and future cpu designs may undermine
Intels' dominance both in netbooks and
mobile cpus. For Intel and Isreali
authorities to want to discourage
competition in this industry is not so far-
fetched.

Awesome! After all that (off-topic) religious spiel

tin hat ?
fredd1 17th Apr 2010
Take off YOUR tin hat doobie. It's the future
of mobile cpus and their place in that
market that Intel needs to worry about, not
that the iPads' cpu is superior to the current
crop of netbooks.
Their Country, their rules! We dont want others telling US what to do or not do! Just dont take your iPad there, or dont go.
