Despite a pricing debacle, anticipation for the Nintendo 3DS handheld console is still high. But just how portable is this device if the battery life is shorter than its predecessor, the DS? Spotted by Joystiq, Nintendo recently published responses from a Q&A session last week, and here is what the reps had to say about the longevity of the 3DS:

As for the battery, it is inevitable that Nintendo 3DS will be a device which requires more frequent recharging than Nintendo DS. This is why we are going to include the cradle, which is a dedicated battery charger. Perhaps we may need to dispatch to our consumers a message, something like, "Please place your Nintendo 3DS on the cradle as soon as you return home with it."

There weren't any specifics about just how long the battery on the 3DS will last from a full charge, nor if the cradle will be included in the box.

We should know more by late this year/early next before the Nintendo 3DS launches in Japan in February, followed by the United States and Europe in March.

  • If you believe Nintendo, the cradle will be included...

When I read the response you quoted from Nintendo, I am left wondering why you say there is no word yet on whether or not the cradle would come bundled with the system.

"... This is why we are going to include the cradle, which is a dedicated battery charger."

My understanding of the English language has me interpreting that statement to mean that the cradle would be included... seeing as to how they said so.

I don't think battery life will be that big a deal, unless they're talking Sega Nomad or Game Gear-esque battery life... that would be abysmal.
6 AA's would get you an hour and a half, if you were lucky!
Plus, the original DS included a charger too, so I don't get why Nintendo's making such a big deal about the stupid cradle.
