Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 & 4.0 hit stores October 16

By | September 27, 2011, 8:26am PDT

Summary: Samsung’s Galaxy Players are essentially Gingerbread-running iPod touches with larger displays that can play everything from FLAC to DivX files, but will consumers notice?

Samsung’s Galaxy Player 5.0 (left) and 4.0 (right) may look and feel like smartphones but are anything but. They are basically Gingerbread running, iPod touch-like media players for those who prefer the Android ecosystem and Samsung’s aesthetics.

Available with either a 5-inch or 4-inch touchscreen, the Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 basically share the same guts as smartphones but minus the cellular radio. In fact, if you have awful cellular reception but a strong Wi-Fi signal wherever you are, the Galaxy Player could double as a smartphone. As long as you have access to the wireless Internet, you will be able to download the latest Angry Bird from Android Market, continue reading your e-Book on your Kindle app, and update your Facebook wall on these media players.

Aside from the difference in screen size, the Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 are powered by different batteries so they also differ in price. The 5-incher makes use of the more powerful 2,500mAh battery so it will retail for $269, while the 4-inch Player uses the 1,200mAh one and is priced at $229. Otherwise, both they share the same specs:

  • Display: WVGA TFT LCD (800×480)
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 3.0; WiFi 802.11b/g/n
  • Internal Storage: 8GB (expandable via microSD card up to 32 GB)
  • Cameras: 3.2-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and LED Flash; VGA front camera; camcorder can shoot and play 720p HD videos
  • Video File Format: MPEG4/H263/H264, Divx/Xvid
  • Audio File Format: MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, OGG, WMA, FLAC, WAV
  • Jacks/Connectors: 3.5mm audio jack, mini-USB, microSD slot
  • Voice recorder, FM Radio and Stereo Speaker
  • Weight:
    • Galaxy Player 4.0 - 4.27 ounces
    • Galaxy Player 5.0 - 6.42 ounces
  • Dimensions:
    • Galaxy Player 4.0 - 2.53 x 4.87 x 0.39 inches
    • Galaxy Player 5.0 - 3.07 x 5.56 x 0.46 inches

Considering the 8 GB iPod touch with a higher resolution retina display also costs $229 (albeit with only a 3.5-inch screen), I think the Galaxy Player 4.0 will have a hard time snatching customers away from the Apple device because it doesn’t beat the touch on price or specs. The Galaxy Player’s strengths are that it caters to Android fans (but so can every other Android phone maker), has a larger screen, and can natively play common media file formats like WMA, FLAC and Divx/Xvid. At least the Samsung devices will give those who like the concept of the iPod touch but hate iTunes an alternative this holiday season. Who knows, maybe the Galaxy Players will get other manufacturers to try their hand at an iPod touch competitor too. After all, consumers could never have too much choice!

Pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 start today on Samsung’s website even though the media players won’t land in stores until October 16.

Market is already stagnated with me too media players, and I don't think people would even notice this.
@Rama.NET

Yeah, there may be a tiny, niche market of Samsung devotees out there who'll be interested, but Apple's pretty much got the rapidly dwindling market of standalone MP3 players all sewed up.
@dsf3g

I dunno, isn't that what people said about the very first Motorola Droid and all other Android phones that followed?

Android does well on phones simply because carriers have incentives to create a balance of power. As such, they offer steep discounts on Android phones, often with BOGO offers just to keep the numbers high. They're selling well to the cost conscious crowd but nobody with an ounce of credibility considers them to be better products. Likewise, Android doesn't do well on tablets because they have to compete on their own merits there, rather than by competing through unusually high carrier subsidies. This mp3 player / small form factor market is no different. Why would anyone spend the same amount of money on inferior hardware with inferior software along with an inferior ecosystem? Just because they hate iTunes? iTunes may not be perfect, but I never hear the people who complain about iTunes offer a valid example of something better.

If that's the case, then this is seriously some bad timing on Samsung's part. Because Apple will surely be releasing a new iPod Touch in October with iOS 5. iOS 5 will be taking advantage of cloud storage and cloud syncing of data, music, which greatly reduce the reliance on iTunes for everything. But regardless, I think only the vocal niche (1%) hates iTunes. Samsung could waste their timing going after 1% of the market. At the same price as the iPod Touch, the rest of the world won't care.
@dave95. after watching a video of the Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 I'm now thinking of selling my 4th gen 32gb iPod touch so I can get the Samsung Galaxy player 5.0.

10 million iPod touches sold last Christmas quarter, a third as many as all Android smartphones, tablets and other devices from all manufacturers put together.

Samsung's Android-based Galaxy One Player has already tried to take on the iPod touch and failed as have the many Android Archos mini-tablets that range in size from 2.7" to 3.1" to 4.3" to 5".

I guess we'll just have to see if Samsung crashes and burns with these as well.

Apple controls the touchscreen PMP market with an iron fist. Just about everyone at my high school totes an iPod touch.

In terms of touchscreen PMPs, there is very little competition. There's the Zune HD (bias alert: I have one), and while it's a very solid little music player, it hasn't been well-supported in terms of an ecosystem. There's the Archos and Cowon players, which run Android and apps, but they're a little clunky and not perfect.

With the right marketing, I think Samsung could make a big push with these. But they probably won't.
You forgot to mention that another advantage the Galaxy mp3 player has over the ipod touch is the FM Radio. I still listen to the radio for music, talk shows, and my local sports teams. The radio is a deal-breaker for me when considering a pmp device.
Had I not already have a 7 inch tablet I would all over the 5.0...still might do any way wink
I see these as less a MP3 player and more smaller tablet.
Getting the 5.0!
I think you missed a few things when stating "Considering the 8 GB iPod touch...also costs $229...I think the Galaxy Player 4.0 will have a hard time snatching customers away from the Apple device because it doesnt beat the touch on price or specs".

Some features these players have which the iPod touch doesn't include (1) expandable memory - up to 40GB with a 32GB microSDHC card (2) FM radio and (3) a GPS antenna (extra handy if you download a navigation app that loads on-board maps).
