SanDisk rep demos HP TouchPad at Computex [Video]

Summary: A SanDisk rep at Computex 2011 shows off the HP TouchPad running webOS 3.0 before its official launch, rumored to be June 12.

GadgetsMagazineTV just posted an extended demo of the much anticipated HP TouchPad by a SanDisk rep (go figure!) at Computex 2011.

SanDisk is one of HP's hardware partners on the 9.7" tablet running webOS 3.0, originally developed by Palm for its Palm Pre smartphone and acquired by HP just over a year ago. The TouchPad uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-CPU APQ8060 (at 1.2GHz), features a XGA capacitive, multi-touch display (1024x768 resolution), offers 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, comes with either 32 or 64 GB of memory, and has a built-in 1.3 mega-pixel front-facing camera. This slate should be in Wal-Mart by June 12 and will cost $599 for the 32GB model, according to SlashGear. (The price for the 64 GB model is not yet available.)

As far as I can tell from this video, the GUI scrolls through applications horizontally like the BlackBerry PlayBook and is quite responsive with no obvious lag. The way the address book consolidates all email accounts and contacts (phone, text, email, IM) into separate interfaces to reduce the user's reliance on apps remind me of the design rationale behind the Windows Phone 7 "Mango" update. I like the ease of multitasking from app to app using both touch controls and the built-in button.

What do you like best about the TouchPad or webOS 3.0?

  • Wow I can't believe that was dual core. That was crap slow and

choppy as h*ll. Glad I saw it, HP probably dropped a load in their shorts knowing a video got out before they had time to get the perf to at least decent. $599 is a bit much for 32G XGA but if it comes down to $399 and you can install Windows 8 onto it instead I'd be tempted to pick one up.

I dunno, I think the demo was pretty smooth. I just can't stand their UI. I love me some blackberry, but I just cannot get aboard the playbook.

Hmm, disappointed in the resolution and we have no idea what the GPU is in this device.

Choppy?? Maybe your youtube video was choppy lol.
It was definitely smooth. Best OS for a tablet out there yet.
  • HP tablets

HP tablets are great devices, but they'll never beat the iPad as far as quality and efficiency goes. There is one thing HP makes well though:

HP ink cartridges
