Sony is getting into the spring mood by adding a dash of bright colors to their new VAIO P Series portable computers. Yet, color isn’t the only lively upgrade on these 8-inch laptops.

Sony is trying to boast the VAIO P computers as somewhere in between a laptop and a smartphone - yet refrains from labeling it as a “netbook.” Weighing in at only 1.32 pounds and built with 3G support, these notebooks are surely ready to go anywhere.

Developers behind the VAIO P Series have also incorporated an on-board accelerometer for toggling the screen display. Battery life comes in the form of two options: either up to five hours with the included battery, or up to 10 hours with a BPL23 battery that is sold separately. There is also a digital compass and GPS support to round off the portable-friendly features.

Here’s what else to expect from the VAIO P Series:

  • 8-inch LCD screen (1,600 x 768 resolution)
  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Intel Atom Z540 processor
  • 2GB of DDR2 memory
  • 64GB SSD Flash Drive
  • WLAN 802.11b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
  • Webcam
  • Two USB ports
  • Stereo speakers and microphone

The color scheme includes black, white, pink, green and orange. The new VAIO P Series computers will become available in June, although pricing hasn’t been revealed yet.

UPDATE: US pricing has been announced and set at $800. It’s available for pre-order at Sony Style stores now.

  • Great miniaturization, questionable features
These VAIO P computers are marvels of engineering, but the high-end screen, disk, and connectivity options seem like an odd mix with the low-end CPU, graphics and operating system. As such I'm not sure exactly toward whom these systems are targeted. People who want tricked-out netbooks and have no budgetary limitations perhaps?
