As previously rumored, Sprint did indeed reveal the Kyocera Echo, a dual-screen smartphone running on Android 2.2 at a special event in New York City this evening.

The hype has been building, especially after some leaks earlier today and Sprint's promise of an "industry first" to be unveiled this evening.

Well, a dual-screen smartphone is certainly something we haven't seen before. Together, the pair of 3.5-inch WVGA LCD touch displays form a 4.7-inch viewing panel. It's a bit reminiscent of the Nintendo DSi XL. The intention? Sprint CEO Dan Hesse says "extreme multitasking," or "simultasking" as dubbed by Sprint developers. That will also depend on the strength of the processor, but it's still an interesting concept. Users will also be able to tilt one of the screens, putting the smartphone into "laptop mode."

Naturally, there is also a tablet mode (everything has to be related to a tablet somehow these days). Users can either run two different programs with one on each display or use both together as one big workspace. As tablet mode is expected to deplete the battery quicker, the Echo will come bundled with a charger and a separate second battery.

Unfortunately, there is no 4G in store for the Echo. Hopefully an Android OS upgrade is in the works, or otherwise this smartphone might come as slightly disappointing to some customers. The Kyocera Echo will roll out this spring for $199 on contract.

  • Another DOA iPhone killer!

    LoL!

    I understand people gotta try... But how are these attempts going to far these days?

    What's next? Maybe a heliphone that floats in the air making it truly hands free! LoL!

      @CarlosViscarra I know right? Every phone is said to be the "new iPhone killer." If you compare the phones on a unit by unit basis, they don't even compare. I love it.

        @Mcleary316 Maybe because Apple doesn't allow the phone to run on other platforms and there is an army of vain people like you who would be OK with paying through the nose to get something that is cool this time of month?

        My, aren't you presumptuous about other people's motivations.

        @Mcleary316 Funny, I didn't see "i" anything mentioned in the article.

        Perhaps a little "i" ego issue???
        Hmm....

        @Mcleary316 I didn't see "iPhone killer" in this article anywhere. Maybe you're the one who has a complex about having to compare everything to the iPhone, no one mentioned it before you did... Why don't you go read some iPhone or iPad articles?

      @CarlosViscarra You need a reality check, Android phones surpassed iPhones a long time ago. It is only downhill with your phone's closed ecosystem. I'm sorry you have to defend a bad choice.

        @nicholas22
        As mentioned below, it is you that needs a reality check (and perhaps to actually read the post). There is not a SINGLE manufacturer who has a phone (or even an entire line of phones) that sells anywhere near as many a Apple.
        As for closed ecosystem, how's it going installing OS update on your phone? How about removing carrier crapware? Open? How'd that OS recompile going? The idea that Android is "open" for end users is a myth. It is open for CARRIERS.

      • Just to be clear, DeusXMachina ...

        ... you think that's a <i>good</i> thing, Apple market dominance? I mean, taking the long view, isn't that exactly what Apple railed against in 1984 with their famous Superbowl ad?

        While the Android marketplace has its share of issues, as you point out, at least it bodes well for mobile computing not getting locked into the kind of 15 - 20 year lack-of-innovation vapor-lock cycle that MS's near-monopoly caused on the "personal computing" front. You think we couldn't have been where we are today as long as 10 years ago, with the outbreak of both media convergence and device divergence, if it weren't for the suppression of innovation that resulted from <i>that</i> little anti-free-market period?

        In 5 years, I think you'll be very glad Apple's dominance was challenged successfully. As good as they are at design and innovation, they would have eventually throttled innovation at a market level.

        Sorry, I thought I was only leaving a 20 word comment when I started, guess you just got my dadgum dander up! Good thing I wasn't cutting someone's hair (if anyone else gets that possibly too-obscure Far Side cartoon reference).

        @DeusXMachina

        yeah but you still fail to understand that its not 1 vs 1 in sales that is important. This is why apple will never overtake microsoft in the desktop and now they are reliving the same lesson in mobile. Their product will get drowned out by the hundreds of other systems. People make android software not samsung galaxy or htc evo or motorola droid software. Android is treated as a single entity. The fact that apple can't grasp this is the reason why they can never stretch out into the lead. Ultimately, people will get bored of the iphone branding and move on. Types of cellphone is very much a fashion trend. If a great product comes out, it wouldn't take a long time for iphones to get phased out considering how quickly people replaces phones. Think about most dominant products out there once upon a time, think sony walkman, sony tv, palm pilot and think how when their time was up how quickly they faded away.

        @ daboochmeister

        I make no value judgment abou their market position. I am fine w/ Android, WebOS, and WM7 in the market. Simply challenging misstatements of fact.

        @rengek

        I forget no such thing. First as Apple's position in the PC market CLEARLY demonstrates, yes it IS 1 vs 1 sales. The only thing that matters to ANY individual company in THEIR sales.
        Besides, they don't need to "overtake" MS to be a success, and not even to make more money, both of which are true, nonetheless.

        "Their product will get drowned out by the hundreds of other systems."

        Please post a single piece of data to support this claim. Good luck with that. Besides which, not that it matters much, but in every market and every carrier where both platforms compete side by side, iPhone is beating Android, across the board.

        "People make android software not samsung galaxy or htc evo or motorola droid software. Android is treated as a single entity. The fact that apple can't grasp this is the reason why they can never stretch out into the lead."

        What you fail to mention is that they also make iOS software, and sell more of it, significantly more. Even with all those vendors, they have not overtaken the app store. Again, not that it really matters, but YOU brought it up.

        "Ultimately, people will get bored of the iphone branding and move on."

        Yeah yeah, so you keep saying. How many more years is that going to take, and what, pray tell, insulates Android from this same principal.

        "Types of cellphone is very much a fashion trend. If a great product comes out, it wouldn't take a long time for iphones to get phased out considering how quickly people replaces phones."

        Maybe so, but, um, still waiting.

      Well, if you look at the market share, Android did technically kill the iPhone. It may not show now but it <i>will</i> in the long run.

        @Zc456
        Oh really? Please name a single market where iPhone is available on multiple carriers, where Android, even collectively, is ahead. Also, you might want to check your definition of "kill".

      • RE: Sprint unveils dual-screen, Android-based Echo smartphone

        @DeusXMachina: The number 1 mobile OS in the world is android. Period. The next leading mobile OS in the world is Symbian. Sure the iPhone has sold more individual units than any one Android model, but that isn't the Android business model and thus that isn't a valid comparator. <br><br><a href="http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/lifestyle/google-replaces-nokia-to-dominate-mobile-phone-industry/story-e6frf00i-1226002244214" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/lifestyle/google-replaces-nokia-to-dominate-mobile-phone-industry/story-e6frf00i-1226002244214</a>

        Personally, I don't believe it will "kill" the iPhone, because there will always be people out there who will buy into Apple's brand of marketing crap and will buy iCrap. As long as Americans just want to throw things away and have the short-term outlook that characterizes us, the iPhone will continue to sell.

        @DeusXMachina
        I said in the long run, not the short. It may not "kill" the product itself but it's becoming same story it was for Mac vs PC.

    • RE: Sprint unveils dual-screen, Android-based Echo smartphone

      @CarlosViscarra Considering that the EVO 4G already killed the iPhone there is no reason for the term to be used anymore.

    There's really no point in reading the article or posts anymore because all the civil discourse is gone. Maybe you should get posters to clean up their act by moderating the comments from now on. There might even be some interesting points made above, but as it stands today, it's just fanboy trolls and flamers.
