Toshiba unveils super thin Excite X10 tablet: $529

Toshiba's latest tablet may be thin, but its price is anything but light.

Move over Transformer Prime, because the Excite x10 is now the thinnest tablet on the block.

Announced in October as the Regza AT700, the Excite x10 latest tablet measures at just 7.7-mm thick, beating out the Transformer Prime by .6mm. The Excite X10 is also a feather-light 535 grams, making it lighter than the iPad 2 by 66 grams.

Equipped with brushed magnesium alloy on its back, the Excite X10's 10-inch, 1280 X 800 resolution display is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass, making it both flashy and damage resistant.

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is on board, as is a TI OMAP 4420 1.2GHz dual-core processor. Toshiba also furnished the Excite X10 with a pair of cameras, a two-megapixel shooter on the front, and a five-megapixel on the back.

Toshiba is also following up on its track record of making tablets with a bevy of ports. The Excite X10 offers Micro-USB, HDMI, Micro SD ports, which is surprising and impressive considering how thin the thing is. They aren't full-size, of course, but they are better than nothing.

As with nearly every other Android tablet, price, perhaps predictably, is a concern.  The 16 GB Excite X10 will sell for $529 and 32 GB model a painful $599. That may not doom the Excite X10 from the start, but it certainly doesn't help its chances for success, especially with cheaper and equally capable devices being announced nearly every day.

Expect the Excite X10 within the first quarter of the year.
