VLC, that popular open source multimedia player, is now available as an app for the iPhone 4 and iPod touch in Apple's iTunes App Store.

Also compatible with the iPhone 3GS, the VLC Media Player app boasts even more codec support than previous versions and the ability to delete files within the app rather than via iTunes.

With this extra (and probably better) way to watch movies on your iOS device, the deletion feature seems useful if you're loading up your storage space quota with random movies all the time.

The VLC Media Player app is free and available for downloading now.

    This has promise.
I don't have an iOS device, so I don't know what all the built-in software lacks, but with the desktop version's codec support & the iOS version's ability to delete via the device, this is already sounding pretty good.
