What tech toys did Santa bring you in 2011?

Summary: Tell us what new gadgets you and your family unwrapped this Christmas!

Santa doesn't usually bring a ton of gifts to my family and friends (birthdays are bigger deals to us than Christmas), and yet this year those around me got a number of shinny new tech toys under their trees:

  • Two iPad 2s - One was a bonus gift for purchasing a new car, while the other was purchased as a gift for new grandparents.
  • One Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 for a new grad.
  • One Dynex 40-inch class 1080p LCD HDTV to replace an aging CRT.
  • Two Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphones with Ice Cream Sandwich because Apple 4Ses are so October 2011.
  • One Olympus E-PL2 Interchangeable Lens Camera - An upgrade from the smartphone to a real camera, without the markup of the recently released E-PL3.
  • One PlayStation 3 thanks to a great Black Friday deal.
  • One 14-inch Gateway laptop with Intel Pentium-CPU to replace an ancient desktop with a 10 GB hard drive. You heard me.
  • One limited edition Nintendo 3DS with gold 'Zelda' markings, and two copies of Pokemon Rumble Blast for its multi-player mode.

Though the sample size is too small to be statistically significant, my anecdotal evidence does mesh with industry trends: tablets, HDTVs, gaming consoles, prosumer cameras, Ice Cream Sandwich-running smartphones and laptops are what consumers are buying these days. What about you? What new gadgets did Santa bring you this year? Make us all jealous in the comments below!

  • RE: What tech toys did Santa bring you in 2011?

That was a LOT of tech toys Santa dropped off to your home this year! You must have been a very good girl.

As for myself, Santa delivered an external Vivitar "Bounce Zoom Swivel" DSLR AF Flash unit to join my Olympus E-510 DSLR. (I always wanted an external Flash unit.) I have to thank my sister for this gift.)

I downloaded the fine iOS app, DSLR, to help me learn how to use this Flash unit (among other things). Although relatively expensive at $9.99, it is a fine digital magazine photography resource. (I have to thank myself for that app, though. Grin)

Finally, on an impulse buy on the last pre-Christmas shopping day, I picked up a slightly discounted iPod Touch basic model for myself. I knew my sister's 11 year old daughter was going to receive an iPod Touch 32 GB model from Santa this year and I wanted a companion model for FaceTime chats and, as it turned out, Apple Messages text chats as well.

My sister's daughter was fantastically happy over her Christmas gift and she had one of her first FaceTime chats with her Uncle yesterday. That evening, I was surprised to receive my first Apple Message penned by my niece. (She is "of that age" and I was happy to help her along as she develops her social skills.) The neat thing about the current iPod Touch models is that they are so small and light weight. I can carry one around with me without too much trouble. (BTW, I don't own a smart phone.) I have to think with FaceTime and Message Chats handled over free WiFi signals, the major Telcoms can't be liking Apple too much over these iPod Touch features. They are "just the thing" for young teenagers on a very fixed budget.

      @Peter Perry

You must post your wife's impressions of the Kindle Fire. I hope she enjoys it. And I hope your wallet doesn't take a big hit! Grin.

Tech rained on us this Christmas. My wife got an iPad2 64GB WiFi to go with her iPad Touch, my youngest, ready to graduate college, got a 42" Hitachi LED TV and a Kindle Fire. My oldest got his younger brother's old (1 year old!) Samsung 32" LCD and a bunch of PS3 games as well as a Netflix subscription, while I got a Kindle Touch and a vintage, Pristine iBook G4 @ 1.42 GHZ, 1.5GB RAM, Airport Extreme, and a 100GB HDD to begin my Apple education. Hey, if you can't beat them, or ignore them, try them, right?
