Winamp for Android becomes a reality in beta mode

Summary: Remember Winamp? That music player program we all used before iTunes? It’s back (not that it ever truly went away), and it’s on Android.

Remember Winamp? That music player program we all used before iTunes? It’s back (not that it ever truly went away), and it’s on Android.

Winamp for Android (in beta) certainly looks revamped from that rectangular box that use to hover in the corner of my monitor several years ago. But hopefully the reliability and ease of use is all still there.

But it has been updated for modern times with album art displays and interaction with several online music channels like Last.fm, Pandora and YouTube.

Compatible with mobile phones running Android 2.1 or later, users can actually sync with with desktops wirelessly if Winamp 5.59 beta is installed on the PC. Then again, there’s always USB syncing too, but that’s too much work.

I used Winamp on MyTouch for the first time on Wednesday, and I like it. Unlike any other players I've used, you can actually shut it down without going outside the program. Thank you, llama!

Interesting but...

Can it play an AAC file? If not...it won't supplant iTunes.

Forget that, I want it to play FLAC's ...

... and 24 bit ones, like Samsung's Galaxy S player. Let's move forward, not backward. We have the storage so lets get hi-fi back (compressed audio does not sound good - we can do so much better).

Yes winamp plays AAC files. You can see for yourself at the bottom of the page after you click the link.

Well if it can stream AAC from the net on my EVO and it doesnt drop the damn connection every 3 seconds for no reason then I'll DL it for sure.
I don't, have never, and will never use iTunes. It's buggy bloat/mal-ware that I don't want touching my computer.

Just do a google search for "bonjour computer problem" and you'll see how much of a problem iTunes is.
@Droid101 ......on anything I own! Winamp has always had the widest appeal offering radio and tv music and video before any of the competition! iCrApple's Quicktime is anything but quick and is so limited by what it can play. Along those ridiculous popup BUY ME iCrAppleware ads!

"Remember Winamp? That music player program we all used before iTunes? " Er a lot of people prefer Winamp actually and have switched from iTunes to Winamp or Foobar since they are sick of iTunes + Quicktime bloat. Don't say 'we all' and assume your readers all use iTunes.

The real question is! Does it still "really whip the lama's A$$"?
@xvcottonvx
According to people on engadget, yes it does. And it seems to play an audio file to drive home that point the first time you start it up... :P

@xvcottonvx Unfortunately, yes. Irritating, it is.
