What's your Super Bowl gameplan?

Summary: To be honest, I have a lot more interest in the high-profile Super Bowl commercials than the Super Bowl itself. But football is, under all the money and hype, still a game, and the natural question to ask is, how do we tie interactive and/or video games in with this once-a-year cultural experience?

To be honest, I have a lot more interest in the high-profile Super Bowl commercials than the Super Bowl itself. But football is, under all the money and hype, still a game, and the natural question to ask is, how do we tie interactive and/or video games in with this once-a-year cultural experience?

This year, we've seen little, apart from the somewhat obvious plan to use Electronic Arts' Madden football video game to play a pre-Super-Bowl simulation. In the just-played official EA match, the Giants defeated the Patriots, 27-24. A reasonable potential outcome, but keep in mind that the Madden simulation was wrong last year, when it predicted that the Pittsburgh Steelers would beat the Green Bay Packers.

Digging back a bit, several Super Bowl gamification efforts were targeted at last year's game. Seattle-based gamification agency BigDoor pointed out a few, including a Mercedes "Tweet Race" that started about a month before the game, awarding both Super Bowl tickets and a car.

During the Super Bowl itself last year, an advertisement for the animated film 'Rio,' featured a code that viewers could use to unlock new levels in one of Rovio's insanely popular Angry Birds games.

While the cost of entry to the Super Bowl is high -- ad space is limited and expensive (an understatement if there ever was one) -- plenty of companies and brands get around that, and the NFL's trademark police, by tying into the "Big Game" or some other such inoffensive, and legally allowable phrase, meaning you don't need to bean official licensee to surf on the wave of Super Bowl excitement.

What Super Bowl (or "Big Game") gaming tie-ins have you seen? (I suppose Fantasy Football is probably the most obvious game mechanic applied to football, but that largely concerns the regular season.) Is it even worth trying to gamify the biggest game experience of the year? Let me know what you think in the comments section below.

I plan on cheering the Patriots as they win. After all if not for Bob Kraft, there wouldn't have been any football this year. So it looks likt the Patriots are once again the "Team of Destiny".

    • Amazing... Someone so WRONG about well just about everything to

@Stephen-B ... be a Patriots fan. I suppose it's just the law of averages. You have to be right about something and in this case it's the Patriots.

@Cylon Centurion Cause your Ravens play in the weak AFC North._Did you seriously think they had a chance? Tom Brady is set to become the only 4 time Superbowl MVP.

      • So not classy... You shame the Patriots with your bravado.

@Stephen-B ... The Ravens played a good solid game and came close to victory. Much better than say Denver who had God on their side! It was a respectable and close game.

jim when will you learn the Patriots are like Microsoft, unstoppable. They have a football god, for a qb, their defense will smother the pathetic Giants weak offense. I have even figured out where I'm going to be for the Victory Parade.

@Badgered Tom Terrific is the best QB to ever play the game. He's Gods Gift to Football. Also he's not being accused of forcing himself on women in bathrooms.
Edit: you also sound a lot like my sisters ex husband Rick, he's a pathetic Steelers fan

      • I remember back in the day the original Charlies Angels

@Badgered ... It was big. And all the girls at school HATED Farrah:). They said so many out right nasty and catty things about her but I knew none of them actually knew her in the least. Still it always puzzled me how anyone could have such an emotional and negative reaction to a person they did not know. Same with Apple haters I suppose. Apple is just another company which choose a different corporate strategy that at one time seemed destined to destroy itself but instead propelled it to where it is today. Still it's a company plain and simple. Now as for Brady you are not the first to make such comments but I am unaware of anything Brady had done to deserve such a reaction? Some of his fans (Steven-B) perhaps but Brady not so much.

  • I'm taking a nap

I'm probably one of the few that really doesn't care one way or the other what happens. I will wait until the next day and view the ads on line.

    • RE: What's your Super Bowl gameplan?

@jdaughtry@... The Patriots are already setting up their plans to meet the Presdent, and what their Parade route will be. Tom Terrific is going to be the MVP, as usual, and the Pats will have the most Rings this century!

The endless commercials is why regular season and playoff games are better then the Super Bowl most times. If would love to time shift the sucker like I do a lot of games so I can skip the commercials but for mega events like this I find that a lot of times I end up finding out the result somehow
