Talk about timing ... just as the iPhone hysteria whips into a physical location frenzy near you, a probably more significant development will unfold on Friday.

Reports have it that the postponed but widely anticipated latest GLP open source license, version 3, will become available.

Red Hat had some comments on it.

So all those lawyers at Microsoft can kill two birds with one off-campus trip. They can buy their Apple iPhone (they can afford one), connect to their iTunes on their Windows laptops, set it up on WiFi and then listen and watch the video stream of the GPLv3 launch on the pristine iPhone screen -- all while still in their cars outside the Apple Store in Bellevue.

Can't do that with a SUSE Linux server, can you?

Sweet.

Please name an Apple or Microsoft server that you can take with you and surf the internet while driving...

Real mature Dana. You're really grabbing at straws when you have to take a swipe at a server with a phone.... The last few days, you see this site replete with people griping about the quality of stories on ZDNet and the obsessiveness of writers and iPhone. You just proved their case when you managed to pull this out out of your posterior.

    • You really think ...

      ... That I'm comparing a server with a phone? Then you're not thinking. It's
perhaps a little inside baseball reference on the GPL v3. Sorry for being a little
facetious. It pokes a little fun at the pretzel logic of the Microsoft-Novell deal.

It may be out of my butt, and over your head.

      • Huh?

What does this have to with SLES?

Novell's traitorous 'interoperability' deal was with MS NOT Apple.

How are iPhone users going to watch the video stream of the GPL v3 launch when the AT&T EDGE network isn't fast enough to support such activities? I suppose you could download the video for later playback but how expensive will AT&T make those bits?

I will however be able to watch the video stream of the GPL release (assuming there is one) easily on my Debian-based N800 via WiFi or via a Bluetooth connection to my phone. No SUSE server needed.

Oh, I can also use my N800 to access my DRM-free music collection on either my laptop or my Debian-based media server.

    • Look at the tabs on the top of your screen.

You'll notice that the active tab is labeled BLOGS.

Dana's entry is not a news story.

That said, I do agree about the quality.

      • The tabs are meaningless...

The tabs are totally meaningless here at ZDNet. I got to this article by clicking on the News tab... And it was listed in the list of news stories under News Tab.

Not my fault that ZDNet is always changing the tab as you peruse through a story and the talkbacks...

  • One Boo Boo and Arcana About Left Coast Lines

    GLP should be GPL.

In Los Angeles at The Grove, the Apple Store line will have to find space to share with
the Ratatouille line; the theatre is across the lane. (If I'm going to wait in one line this
fine summer weekend, it will be the latter.)

  • Can't do it on SuSE because Apple is too lazy to make the drivers.

    • Fortunately, I use Windows but I see no reason to give them more money.

After Jobs had his tirade on schools and teachers (probably because they got smart and ditched this company that preys on the shallow and indolent), that was pretty much the last straw...

There are other reasons, including gross hypocrisy, but I won't go there right now.

  • Sure you can!

All you need is a backpack to carry it in, a car battery, a frame to hold the keyboard and some VR glasses... of course you'll look like a complete nerd but then so do all the people lining up to buy a phone just because it's got the Apple logo on it. At least this way you can claim you're testing new augmented reality software and appear the eccentric genius, whereas the iPhone crowd will still look like a bunch of status obsessed fashion-victims.
