Microsoft becomes one developer's new hero

A developer writes that he sees more income in his future by developing in Visual Studio and, via Mono and blessed by the Novell-Microsoft pact, deploys easily to Windows or Linux.

He says that Microsoft just simply waited for Linux to gain sufficient market share for them to begin to monetize it, in addition to Windows, albeit at lesser margins.
Hard to argue with that. Surely, developers may work the market both ways: Develop on open source and deploy to Linux or Windows, or develop in .NET 3.0/Visual Studio and deploy to Windows or Linux. Developer choice has never been so grand, or potentially lucrative. Write once, run anywhere, eh?
He sums up: "Microsoft is now my hero, and if I were Apple, I would be watching things closely. If MS can play in both arenas ... scary."
Ah, yes, the old heart and minds of developer strategy. It certainly has worked well in the past, for both open source as well as Microsoft.
