Google+ business profiles coming soon

By | July 8, 2011, 2:57pm PDT

Summary: While the jury’s still out on when Google+ will be getting apps and games, within two weeks, you’ll be able to add brands and corporations to your feed. Hooray?

Despite some early signs of success, Google+ is still missing a few things which Facebook has conditioned social networkers to accept as standard. But while the jury’s still out on when Google+ will be getting apps and games, within two weeks, you’ll be able to add brands and corporations to your feed. Hooray?

While Google+ has been judicious about eliminating profiles that aren’t for real people, the Ford Motor Co. snuck one in for itself. In response, Google+ has opened an “Entity Profile” application for the first round of businesses who get to reach out directly to customers.

In an interview with Ad AgeChristian Oestlien, the lead product manager for social advertising at Google, revealed that two-week timeline, and gave a few other details. It seems that MTV and Mashable are strong early candidates for the new pages, with “tens of thousands” of other applicants competing for a spot.

Oestlien is indicating that he wants Google+’s brand pages to include large, socially-active companies, as well as smaller entrepreneurs and startups. Essentially, Google+ only wants companies who really take advantage of the social web. Dell, for example, has apparently been hosting Meetup webcam chats on Google+, which has put the company in Google’s good graces.

The fact that Google+ is essentially opening the door to more advertising is good news for marketers - and there are those networkers who appreciate the ability to interact with their favorite “entities.” But do Google+ users really want the product to go down this road?

"But do Google+ users really want the product to go down this road?"

Do they have a better idea for how Google can make money out of it? Like Facebook, it's a social networking site run by an advertising company, what do they expect?

And this is news how?

Really, an advertising company opening their product (Google+ users) up to their customers (advertisers)? Why is this news to you? This is a classic case of the scorpion and the frog.

With nearly all social nets it is impossible to track results back to individuals and then to their purchases. That makes SocMed advertising more like TV and billboards than like email as far as metrics and personalization. Depending on how Google enables the ads and user ToS, this may become a better solution for marketers.

Awesome, thanks for sharing the link to the biz application!

In the GOOG vs FCBK (that's what I think their ticker is going to be)... Google would do well if they leverage more of the business side of social networking...

People would be more willing to share and ask to engage with the company they work for on Google+ before Facebook.

Take me for instance, I have almost 1000 friends on FB, but more than half of them are people I've met once or just have a lot of friends in common and I don't know them personally.

Whereas I email and chat with my good friends, business partners & clients through Gmail every day...

I would be much more inclined to blast a note out to my email rolodex that says "Follow my company" than to do so to all my facebook friends... That's just me happy

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! Thank you very much || thanks for nice content this is really benefit to me.
