Google launches new disruptive phone feature

By | August 25, 2010, 3:08pm PDT

Wow, this is huge. Google has made it so you can make free local and long distance calls (to US and Canada), and cheap international calls from directly inside Gmail. If that wasn’t cool enough, you can even receive phone calls right inside Google Talk if you are either away from your phone, or you simply don’t have one.

You can now feasibly get phone service anywhere in the United States for absolutely nothing. You get a Google Voice number, and a Gmail account, and you magically have unlimited inbound and outbound calling — free.

You don’t need a physical phone to use Google Voice anymore, and that is big news. The technology behind this feature comes partially from the acquisition of Gizmo5 not so long ago.

In addition to the free calling from your computer, Google is also rolling out old school phone booths in airports and campuses. These magic booths will provide free calling — but I think it’s mainly going to be used to help get the word about Google Voice out there.

Have you tried the new feature yet? What do you think? I’ve personally given it a whirl, and was really impressed by the sound quality from both ends.

The service does NOT run through Google Talk, but is a stand alone product that is integrated into Gmail. It is important to make this distinction because the new Google Phone service does not work with the desktop, mobile or web based versions of Google Talk.

All that being said, the service is fantastic!

There are many flaws in your statement, Mr. Rogers
Mister Spock Updated - 25th Aug 2010
First, the most fascinating is that you believe this will be dispurtive. Skype has allowed this for quite some time, and the telecomunication companies are still doing fine.

Second is the obvious one, in that you tend to grossly overvalue ("hype" as you humans call it), anything that Google does, in an attempt to make it seem much more then it really is, and that tends to color your judgement.

You do not look at things related to Google logiclly. It will be yet another Google program that you touted as " a competitor killer" that wil go the way of many other failed Google offerings of the recent past

@Mister Spock

Well said Mr. Spock, Mr. Rogers is nothing more than a Google puppet.

Live long and prosper....

A Google Voice number is more than a Skype number. Do some research.

The difference is you can port your own personal number with Google Voice. You can't do that with Skype. Google Voice will be a component that will fit into Google's big picture. When you use Google Voice, you can get voice mail converted to text transmissions which you can receive in Gmail. How about with Skype? Nope. Google Voice can ring all your phones at once depending on who you want to reach you by which phones. Skype? Nope.

@jack of daniels I have to correct a few things here with your comments. You don't port a personal number to google voice. You create one when you activate the account. Porting would mean you are using an existing phone number which you wouldn't be able to do.

The transcription still sucks, but sometimes it's enough to get the gist of what someone is saying. You can actually get them sent to your email AND SMS to your cell phone.

What I really like about GV is that I have the number setup in my at&t account on the A-List (free calls to/from the number) and since I set it up to be my voicemail number instead of the default AT&T vm I don't get charged for calling my vm anymore. You can also do this to get free calls from anyone by giving them your google voice number and have it forward the calls to your cell phone. AT&T would see it as coming in from your GV number which if setup on the a-list would be free.

@Garrett, How is this in anyway a "disruptive phone feature"? Did you just title the article that to make more people curious about it? Not a single thing in the article states how this would be disruptive. You should probably change the title or at least explain what you mean by disruptive phone feature.

they are offering this for free in the US and Canada until the end of the year. They might charge after that. Other companies have been offering this service for some time: Microsoft Live Messenger and Skype as two examples. Not sure why all the hype about the late entry of Google in the game. They are giving it for free to gain some market share...

@samofdetroit You know nothing about Google Voice numbers. They are nothing like the two services you listed. Do some research.
