Google Me coming this Fall?

By | September 14, 2010, 6:22pm PDT

Eric Schmidt has confirmed that we could be getting “Google Me” sometime this Fall. This Google Me service will introduce what Google calls “a social layer” into online search, video and Google Maps.

The Wall Street Journal and Reuters quote Google CEO Eric Schmidt saying the company will integrate social networking elements to its services.

What’s interesting to me is that this doesn’t sound like it’s going to be a stand-alone product — it appears the plan is to weave some social goodness into Google’s existing product base. Squeezing social stuff into their already successful products is probably Google’s best shot at getting widespread adoption — as I imagine it would be extremely difficult to get 500 million users to see the value in a competing service, and then decide to switch.

I am looking forward to see what Google’s got up it’s sleeve — and I’m hoping it’s going to knock my socks off. What do you think “Google Me” will look like?

wow really fun times, google competing with facebook and apple simultaneously. Apple also competing with facebook and Google simultaneously. Ha ha sad microsoft. I have never seen such fierce competition, great to be consumers now I guess.

Google last year introduced Google Buzz letting users share links, pictures, and thoughts with friends, but Buzz hasn?t exactly put a check in Facebook?s growth.

i think it will first showcase some awesome online games (not just another flash ones but games using o3d webgl etc...) given the fact that lots of game companies Google had acquired recently ,
Second, it does make sense to use it as a social layer in the existing products rather than new product in itself , the wow factor here is that we have seen the fun when we update our status on facebook and when apps and games do it , but we haven't seen our google talk status update when we do a search or go a cool restaurant (again a search in maps ) or upload a picasa photo , and Google games might be next ,real time tweets are in place , google instant is awesome , because all this we haven't experienced together ,might be really cool
Hope privacy issues do come up again happy all in all great times ahead

Are you nuts? Google tried to force all of its Gmail customers into its last social networking system, Buzz, and failed miserably. There's a LOT of people who want to use Google for search, and some cool apps, but do NOT want to be tied into a social network... or want to be sure they know when they are posting things publicly, like being on the Facebook page.

If Google tries to force social networking features on their customers again, they will again fail miserably, and it could do long term damage to their brand.

Buzz failed. But one failure doesnt mean always . . .

I use Google a lot for search,Google Earth, and e-mail -- but I never got excited about Buzz. And I'm not wild about Chrome. But I am looking forward to seeing what this is.

Not as bad as Google Wave
salsurra Updated - 15th Sep 2010
I'm just hoping that Google Me is not a re-update of Google Wave just integrated into more places. The disaster they had with rolling out Buzz in Gmail will pale in comparison if they don't do this right. Google Wave, their first attempt at a social experience was a huge failure and waste of time. Please don't give us another version of that.

Whatever the final application may be I hope that it provides a true value to users and businesses alike. It will be extremely disappointing if it ends up just being more noise.

I really hope that Google Me becomes more than another Facebook. There are a lot of components of Google that they could use to create something truly awesome: http://bit.ly/9ZMJwS

Is this best for the "internet"
bunknown 16th Sep 2010
Ok. So google "owns" a majority of the internet (I use the word own very sparingly here) , but i ask whats left of the internet if google does own it? I ask is the internet dead now? The freedom to post anything you like, and it become popular. The ability to say anything you want. The choice to go to the internet and promote your product or service.

It is my prediction if this service google is offering becomes widespread, than google will ultimately be brought up on anti-trust charges.

it wont be as good as Facebook ! in fact no one will replace facebook for at least 5 years from now..

Google me will end up like Google Buzz, a total failure..

i wonder when Google will stop diversifying ..

Do you think Google using PriorityInbox to gather intelligence to populate GoogleMe (like they did for Buzz)? http://bit.ly/buvlns

I'd like to see a hand-drawn, colourful, animated commercial with dozens of little moving icons/characters representing each of google's products all coming together in a somewhat circular stream - while the voiceover implies the crystalisation of social is all these disparate Google elements finally coming together!

Good day to confirm this comment I would appreciate T h e b e s t o f Z D N e t d e l i v e r e d your website very nice to everyone Yes, Oracle is the only one with shared-disk architecture, but that is there advantage. It means you can add or remove nodes and the database lives on. In a shared nothing architecture, if you lose a node, you lose the system. I'm sure Oracle appreciates EMC highlighting their advantage.I also desire to signal in your RSS feeds. Thank you as soon as once again and maintain up the great operate Awesome post! Thank you very much || thanks for nice content this is really benefit to me.
