At the Web 2.0 Expo, Adobe employees gave a demo showing off a prototype version of a tablet running Android OS, and Adobe Air. What struck me is how well and smooth the application they were demoing seemed.

One beef I’ve had with Android in the past was the responsiveness of applications — they really don’t hold a candle to most iPhone apps. Those who have used both cannot argue that iPhone has superior scrolling capabilities (both between screens, and through list boxes and such) over the stock Android operating system.

This app, though, appears to feel extremely fluid. The person giving the demo is swiping through screens, and it’s easy to see that there is absolutely no noticeable lag.

If this is in fact what Adobe Air on android is going to perform like, we’re in for a treat with Froyo (Android 2.2). I am definitely looking forward to it!

  • What will **really** struck you is how quickly the battery will be drained
iPad gives like 10 hours of surfing (an average between up to 13 hours of only video viewing and 6 hours of super heavy 3D gaming activities), while Adobe Air/Flash will dwarf this term, alas.

  • Amazed by your ability to tell the future
I am truly impressed with your obviously incredible abilities to see into the future, considering you are able to tell that Flash will have a dramatic effect on some device's battery, when the new version hasn't even been released yet. Now, could you please tell me tonight's lottery numbers too?!

@denisrs "Adobe Air/Flash will dwarf this term [iPad's 10 hours]"

You might be right, Android could dwarf the iPad's battery life. (You do know what that means, right?)

That's just silly. For one, most video on Flash these days is H.264. So on Android, it accelerates just like any other H.264 video... no battery loss. It doesn't on the iPhone, and it didn't on the Mac until very recently, simply because Apple didn't have open video acceleration APIs. Not Adobe's fault.. as witnessed by the fact that Flash Video is fast and reliable on the PC.

Normal flash code isn't going to be much different in performance than other means of programming.

Apple really stacked the deck by building an OS that inherently made video on non-Apple programs slow, then they turned around and blamed the applications.

As for surfing and video, I'm holding out on tablet devices until the nVidia Tegra2 units ship this summer. We should see a good dozen, with things like USB and HDMI output. And, oh-by-the-way, these are 2.5x faster than the iPad on CPU, faster still on GPU, and they get 16 hours playing full HD H.264 video. iPad is going to feel very, very old, very, very soon.

  • Android apps
Well, the responsiveness of android apps is kind of a sticking point. Java was built to perform well, however, people miss that Java was designed with the *console* in mind. Swing and java ui was in large part an afterthought. If you look at the application life cycle of android, you see abstraction on top of abstraction, which just adds latency. I have a few minor minor issues with how the environment handles state transition as well, but that's a subject for another time. Don't get me me wrong, I adore javaFX as a technology, but yes, java is really, really heavy, even in the ultra-compressed mobile edition android runs on. Still, it's a joy to develop for despite all that.

I will have a very hard time deciding between an android and windows mobile 7 phone when the time comes.

  • Google breaking trust - sorry - don't know where else to post
Don't know how long but I think I've been seeing it for a month or two. Google "cheap dental tape" without the quotes. Finish that search. Google "cheap batteries". Get several ads for "dental" and "dentist" in both left and right columns. Go advanced search and exclude dental and dentist. Still get ads in left column, second row for "dental" and third row for "tape" and in right column for "dental plans", "cheap dentist", and "free health care".

    I've got the screen captures.

They're messing with us. Did they get bought by Facebook ?

One of the joys of Google was they didn't try to second guess and ALL RESULTS WERE PLAUSIBLY RELEVANT TO THE SEARCH.

Ever since I heard Eric Schmidt whom I find much too corporate on Charlie Rose I've expected cheap marketing tricks like this were in the offing. This is worse that I expected because they aren't just adding ads, they're breaking trust.

    Arrrrrrgggghh

If you search "without quotes" in Google, that explains why you don't get relevant results. Try searching WITH quotes or more specifically yet, with brackets, & your results will be better.

  • HTC/iPhone V Android Air/iPad
HTC is on par with or slightly ahead of iPhone ovrall. It took HTC roughly a year to get there. Hopefullu, Android Air will at least be close to that when released. iPhone and iPad are both fine products if you are comfortable with Apple's "walled garden", lack of flash or a suitable substitute, and content/app censorship. AFAIK, Android Air will be unencumbered by these negatives. Anyway, always good to have more than one relevant player.
