Solution to annoying GMail Talk popup

Solution to annoying GMail Talk popup

Summary: I finally got the chat feature in GMail and have to say that I am mostly impressed.  The only "feature" that came close to making me turn it off was the annoying popup that shows up when hovering over names -- give us the option to turn those off, please!

gmailtalklogo.gifI finally got the chat feature in GMail and have to say that I am mostly impressed.  The only "feature" that came close to making me turn it off was the annoying popup that shows up when hovering over names -- give us the option to turn those off, please!

I didn't want to disable the chat functionality completely because I can actually see some use in this feature, and I really want to like it.  So I turned to Greasemonkey and created a user script that disables those popups myself.

Greasemonkey is a Firefox extension that lets developers create scripts to add or change functionality on websites by using javascript.  If you have Greasemonkey installed, you can get the user script I created here, or make your own to do the same task.  My solution is a bit of a hack -- it disables all "mouseover" events.  I haven't seen any side-effects after installing my script but feel free to edit it yourself.

Here it is if you wish to make modifications:

// ==UserScript==
// @name          GMail Popup Disabler
// @description      Disable the annoying GMail Talk popup.
// @include       http://mail.google.com/*
// @include       https://mail.google.com/*
// ==/UserScript==

document.addEventListener('mouseover', function(event){ event.stopPropagation(); event.preventDefault();}, true);

  • side effects?

    dont many menu navigation bars as well as animated buttons as well as flash make use of onmouseover?

    just for example, http://www.valissoft.com hover over the buttons and they should light up, in some menu bars they would open sub menu's. i wonder if your hack breaks these things.

      The greasemonkey script only modifies behavior at mail.google.com webpages. You don't have to worry about other pages' hover effects being stifled.

      • install error?

        ff 1.5.0.1; greasemonkey installed yesterday, then tried to install from link. exception error msg - "compenent returned failure code 0x804b000a etc etc" - tried from install button on link and via right click "install" suggestions?

          That's interesting... have you been able to install any other greasemonkey scripts? or is it specific to this one?

          I would suggest, which I'm sure you have tried already, restart your computer... second thing I would try:
          uninstall greasemonkey,
          close your browser,
          re-install greasemonkey,
          close your browser,
          try installing user script,
          close your browser

          hope that works!

    • won't have an effect

      The author's script specifies the include directive, which tells Greasemonkey on which sites to execute the script. Therefore, it will only run on mail.google.com. It could possibly effect other Gmail features, but I haven't looked into that.
