This type of thing doesn’t happen to very many people, but the founders of Google had a dream, and they made it real. It’s truly inspiring to see how lofty goals and ambition can make really big things happen.

Google is not Microsoft

How many times through those 12 years have we concluded that Google is the better choice because the alternative is Microsoft?
Seems to me Google didn't know where they'd be in 12 years time, many of their ideas came from outside the company.

What they had was a combination of:

Microsoft turned the world against themselves, with large payments to the Bush campaign to overturn an anti-trust case. Hated Microsoft meant people wanted a champion.

A good hiring policy, once you get crud programmers in your team, your tainted and will fail. They hired well and empowered those workers.
