11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

Summary: Face it. If you're foaming at the mouth over the iPad 2, you already have an iPad.

The rumor mills are having a field day. Our own Larry Dignan reports on reports that Apple may be introducing the iPad 2 on March 2. The tech industry groupthink known collectively as Techmeme has lost its collective mind.

Into this insanity must come some reason, and with that reason must come reasons. In this article, I present five completely new reasons not to buy an iPad 2, along with six reasons that sadly survive from my earlier article about the original iPad, 9 reasons you might NOT want to give an iPad this Christmas.

I can feel the love already, but remember: making money is a lot of work. You should keep it in your pocket and only share it with Apple if it'll buy you something you need. Just because you've been hypnotized by Apple's hype is not a good reason to lose $500-800 bucks. Trust me on this. I've been there.

Before I try to put the sanity back in the bottle, let me remind you that -- at least as of today -- the iPad 2 is just rumor. So when I tell you these things, they're based on the best rumors available, purveyed by the very best of the rumor purveyors in the land.

Once we've seen the child of light, for real, we'll know more. In the meantime, let's get started.

Reason 1: The iPad 3 is coming

Yes, last time I said not to buy an iPad because the iPad 2 was on the horizon. Now, I'm telling you not to buy an iPad 2 because the iPad 3 is on the way. There's a reason.

All indications are that the iPad 2 is a mere mid-season design refresh, shrinking the size a bit, adding a camera where a camera was always expected, and keeping the display the same.

Apparently, Apple couldn't get the Retina display ready in time for a spring launch, so they're just going ahead with a paen to the masses, and launching the iPad 2.

Mark my words: if you get an iPad 2 now, you'll be deeply disappointed when the iPad 3 comes out.

Reason 2: Steve Jobs may not be hands-on

Update: Slight lack of sleep here. Verizon does have an iPad, so don't expect to see AT&T-only as an issue. Updated Reason 2 to reflect a possible lack of obsessive adult supervision.

Steve Job's fingerprints have been on virtually all Apple products released in the last decade. His obsessive attention to detail has been responsible for the exceptional fit and finish unique to Apple products, but also for some of the quirks and limitations.

With Jobs on medical leave, the same level of care and attention may not be taken for this next generation of products. Apple claims Jobs is still running the show, but if the poor guy's sick, he just may not be able to be as hands-on as he used to be -- and the question is whether that will impact the quality and overall vision of the products.

For reasons far more than just Apple products, we hope Jobs gets well, soon.

Reason 3: No removable storage

The rumor mongers ran amok over the past few weeks with the theory that the iPad 2 would have an SD slot. This, of course, violates Apple's basic Gestapo approach to hardware design, and was unlikely to be part of the iPad 2.

Now, the rumoristas are reporting that there won't be an SD card slot, removing any practical, non-camera advantage of the iPad 2 over the original iPad.

Reason 4: You already have an iPad

Face it. If you're foaming at the mouth over the iPad 2, you already have an iPad. It's just an obvious point. If you haven't already purchased an iPad, then you have some control over your purchase urges and you'll wait and see what the market has in store.

But if you're reading this, getting more and more worked up, shaking your fist, and screaming, "Gewirtz!" into the drop ceiling of your mom's basement, then you already have an iPad.

The iPad 2 is the same machine. Sure, there might be a little more RAM and it might hurt your tiny, little hands a little less to lift it, but that's about it. Yes, we're hearing there's a camera, but the sad truth is that if you're one of those rabid Apple fanbois still living in your mom's basement, no one other than your mom wants to see your face.

Save your money.

Reason 5: Competition

Without a doubt, every electronics manufacturer has noticed the insane success of the iPad. To Apple's credit, none of them has managed to compete on both functionality and price. As our own Jason Perlow reports, no one else has Apple's supply chain advantage.

But the past doesn't equal the future and there will undoubtedly be interesting competitors, especially coming from the HP/Palm partnership and from the Android world. Sure, there will be horrid, little Android tablets littering the land, but there will eventually be real contenders.

At that point, you might want to look for an open device that will allow you to use your hardware the way you want, without Mommy Apple holding your hand all the way.

Well, except for you angry Mac fans living in the basement. We know your story.

Reasons 6-11: The more things stay the same

No matter how exciting it is that Apple's introducing a new product, and no matter how much you think any Apple introduction should be enshrined as a national holiday, the fact is that this promotional event is merely that: promotional.

Much of the iPad's original limitations are still out there. I draw your attention back to my original 9 reasons article and present to you a short list of iPad disappointments that probably will still remain disappointments:

  • Reason 6: There’s still no USB port
  • Reason 7: You still have to use iTunes
  • Reason 8: There’s still no way to wirelessly synchronize your bookmarks
  • Reason 9: Kindles are still much less expensive
  • Reason 10: You can still only run software approved by Apple
  • Reason 11: It still can’t be used as a standalone computer

So there you go. Eleven reasons. If you haven't bought an iPad, the iPad 2 might be a worthwhile buy, especially if you want to spend $600 on the very best Angry Birds game console ever created.

But if you already have an iPad, save your money. Some day, your mom may insist you move out and you'll need that money for rent (or to buy an iPad 3).

TalkBack below. I know, I know. Just drink some soothing tea and it'll all be better soon.

iPad 2: still just as useless as the first for anything useful other than a game platform.

    points 6-11 really kill it.

No removable storage is also a big limitation. Chances are Apple will never include this. Aside from most likely "being too complex for users", it remains a selling point. Why buy cheap storage when for a few hundred dollars more, you can buy a bigger model?

But the real killer is that it's not a real tablet! Where is the handwriting recognition? You know, that killer feature for students and business people alike?

@Cylon Centurion 0005 Horse and Buggy owners felt the same way about the Model T (a toy for the rich).

The first home computers (Mattel Aquarius, Texas Instruments TI-99, the Commodore and Apple II) were nothing more than toys as well. I owned 2 of the 4.

      Have some vision.
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

@Bodazapha I owned 2/4 also and they were very capable computers for running one app at a time. They weren't very speedy and not very beautiful graphically, but they could run text based business software very well and still beat doing business on paper. All today's OSes really add is pretty graphics.
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

I had an Apple II. I had the first word processor, Apple Pie, and the first spreadsheet, Visicalc. I should probably give back the six figures I made doing court reports, treatment plans, quality assurance evaluations, contract proposals etc. I had no idea it was just a toy. Of course I didn't own any games.
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

@Bodazapha I must say, the above messages have been highly entertaining for my wife and I. We do not understand how we go from the iPAD to the president. It seems to me that everyone has an ax to grind. To think that one President, whether it was Bush or anyone else, brought our country to ruin, then thier political knowledge and virews are extremely limited. Just as it is rather naive to expect that one man, the president, current, that is, will singlehandedly undo the damage in one turn. The damage was done by all of us, the hungery bankers, the crooked politians, with their porkbarrel projects, the Man to lazy to go to work when he can be supported by the government. All those who kept saying me me me, instead of looking to the future. America has gone from a major industrial power to a service nation. And much of this has been because many corporations have moved their base from the U.S. to overseas, all in the name of profit at the expense of our country. Steve Jobs is one, remember, apple is built in China, where the labor is cheap, and then brought to the U.S. for our dollars to be spent on. American Contractor Companies overseas who receive our tax dollars for work then turn around and hire 1 american for every 10 Indians or Pakistanis or Philippinos to do the work because they will work for 10% of an Americans wages. And the profits go into corporate of course. Yet Americans demand higher and higher salarys themselves, pricing themselves right out of the labor market. But the only way we can bring ourselves up from the ruin we have fallen into, is when all of us, individually and collectively, reunite in the traditional American spirit of country first, one nation, for the good of the nation.

@Bodazapha Oh puhlease, "the visionary" has spoken. tl;dr
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

@Bodazapha The model T was never a toy for the rich. The rich bought Mercedes-Benz, Rolls Royce, Cadillac, etc., which were around long before the model T.

      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

@jsanko: what @Bodazapha is referring to is that they were toys compared to PDP-11, VAX, System/32 and S/360 which ironically were the competitors. Why? Because most offices had tens of thousands of terminals which could do word processing, batch jobs and inventory management using relational databases no where near found on PC (not even I.B.M.'s original PC). There was even a company that rented timesharing space on mainframes via dialup (CompuServe)

With time, people found that those tiny processors could do plenty of stuff.

Today slates are seen as toys by people who can't see the synergies between low weight touch devices and hyper distributed apps in the cloud.

You will never convince them, but don't worry. iPad users are mostly children. In 10 years time, they will know nothing of PC and everything of tablets (just as must of us knew nothing of the mainframe space I mentioned earlier, which ironically is still being used by die hard users).
    • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

      @Cylon Centurion 0005

I will NEVER buy any apple products because none of them have any REAL functionality.
People that go out and blindly buy something made by apple with a lower case i in front of the name really get on my nerves.
Talking about sheeple. Just like the ones that voted for the worst president in U.S. history, yeah Barak Obama.
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

HAHAHA Thanks for making me laugh.
      • Reason 12 (The only real reason people will not buy an iPad)

Reason 12: Because you are retarded.

Yes, you would rather pout and sit and wallow in your pity party than go buy anything you would actually enjoy using. You are so anal that you can't get over the fact that the only real choices are within the walled garden and not outside of it... In fact, there are more choices inside, then for all other devices combined. So you sit there, with a bad case of Hater-aids, refusing treatment... Well at least we know not to get you an iPad for christmas. Instead we will get you a brand new crash helmet... Dahhhhhh! Ba Chooey Chomp, Ba Chooey Chooey Chomp! (for all you SP fans)
      • mikroland is an idiot

@mikroland i bet your dumb ass wrote-in Sarah Palin
      • franknitty is an iddy

mikroland would not have to write in Palin -- she was on the ballot, genius!
      • techboy_z is an idiot...

Hence the reason he would be an idiot for writing in Palin... genius!
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

@mikroland I have an iPod nano. It was a gift. Now that I have it I like it. Not that I use it much. Apple computers are pretty nifty in the right scenarios, like our newsroom environment using Final Cut Pro. Anyway, your claim that apple products don't have any real functionality is foolish drivel and easily disproved. On the other hand, it is very easy to prove that Barry BHO Sotero has no real functionality.
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

@mikroland Right on. The way he brought your country to ruin is incredible. Oh no. Hang on. That was Bush. Obama just got landed with an unfixable mess.
You have a very short or blinkered memory.
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

@mikroland You underscore your ignorance with that closing statement? I'm the opposite of an Apple fanboy, but you can't come off a Bush presidency and criticize Obama's presidency, approve of him or not. This country has thankfully been in an economic upturn since the election, but STILL hasn't recovered from the more-rapid-than-progressive tanking that this country took under Bush's [lack of] guidance.
It got so bad that it's taken some ridiculously radical, previously absolutely unheard of tactics like a government bail-out of automakers...
...actually, that rock bottom moment happened still in the Bush years.
Like I said, given the 8 year vandalization and corroding of our country prior, you can't blame the current president - no matter who it is - that things aren't all shiny and new.
That's pretty ignorant... we have a HUGE hole to climb out of - Obama didn't dig any of it, so criticizing his ladder for not being long enough is a little misguided.
      • RE: 11 reasons NOT to buy an iPad 2 (including 6 that haven't changed from the iPad 1)

@mikroland The BEST president in US history!!
      • I'm not even going to get into the foolish

Apple comments you made... To easy like shooting fish in a barrel. So you think the President who saved us from a depression, Saved GM which is profitable now, and saved my life and many others is the worst President ever. You see when the recession hit my company had already filed Chapter 11 and I survived the first few rounds of cuts and layoffs. Then the killer recession hit and as an attempt to save even more money my company became self insured. Seems like a good idea except I being a life long diabetic and suffering from kidney failure had had a transplant that (thanks to the STUPIDITY of certain of my country me) stem cell research had been put on hold for a cool decade and I had to get a transplant that my body would reject so I had to take at least two very expensive anti rejection drugs to keep from rejecting that kidney. Hence my SELF insured companies problem... I was blanking expensive!!!! So the next round of layoffs me and a few others who either themselves or their wife/children were ill were let go. Now they did not say that of course but hey it's a smallish town and we all happened to run across one another from time to time and talk and there was this universal "HEY!" But what are we common folk with stupid medical bills thanks to our countrymen and women (Christians) going to do sue? Yeah I can wait for that to work its way out and spend money of lawyers... What a concept!!! Still Obama passed the "stimulus" got me a little extra in unemployment good. Extended my unemployment... Better. Made it possible for me to afford my COBRA payments... BEST!!! All in the Stimulus it literally saved my life. If that is true for me and it was then it has to be true for thousand if not 10 of thousands of Americans in similar circumstances due to NOTHING they personally did wrong cause I'm good but I can't affect Wall Street Bankers and such. You sir know not how many children were saved, nor the amount of men and women who still live today because of that stimulus. You sir are a sad and silly man.

        Pagan jim
        James Quinn
      • James Quinn is right on the money!!!

        @James Quinn

And now the Republitards want to take away that health care, yet, they don't want to lose their own government health care (2 faced bastards that they are)... They just want to steal it away from the millions of Americans that they claim to represent... Those Millions of Americans never see a dime of the kick backs the crooked Republitards get for killing Americans... The only Death Panel thus far has been the Republican Party...

You know.. the thing that kills me about Republitards is that 97% of them are wannabes and the other 3% are the super rich that actually benefit from the Republitard agenda... That 97% just keeps shooting themselves in the foot with every single vote... All because they are wannabes.

Dems aren't much better... But at least they seem to care about the country. The exact opposite of the anti-american republican party... I personally wish everyone would go independant and people would vote according to the person and not the corrupt parties...
