China cracks down on porn

Summary: China is launching a porn crackdown and it wants search leaders Google and Baidu to make sure porn is filtered from search results.

Google needs to do more to block pornography from leaking into China, the government charged Monday, as it launched a month-long anti-porn campaign, PC World reports.

But it's not just Google. China also wants these sites to their part: Baidu.com, Sina.com. Sohu.com, Netease.com and QQ.com.

Chinese authorities are upset over users uploading their own home-made porn. A woman was detained in Shanghai last month for allegedly filming herself having sex and posting the video online, where it became a sensation among Chinese Internet users. The Chinese pointed out this video in a statement in which they complained that tens of thousands of Chinese were searching for the video on Baidu.

VentureBeat wonders if this is a pretext for a larger crackdown. Its correspondents note that this is the 50th anniversary of the Tibet invasion and the 20th of Tianamen Square.

On the other hand, it may just be a porn crackdown and nothing more. Guess there's just no telling with China's leadership.

      and accountable adult. If you have children... again your responsibility to ensure they are not exposed to what you deem in appropriate.

      It's time Americans grow up and start being accountable for their actions. It's time you start acting like adults and stop expecting the government to take care of everything.

          ...what point you are making? China sees the West as decadent but seems more inclined to pass laws to make adult activity restricted in any way the dictators choose. hether this is out of 'moral superiority' or rules for rules sake (which seems more likely!)

          The reason its news is that we in the West have generally a more relaxed attitude to life. Full stop.

          It takes a true democracy to see oppression and repression for what it is.

          However in the West, what you can do often comes down to affordability. (May not always be socially just!)

          How many adult porn stars/ producers / glamour models make an easy living AND are fully accountable for their lifestyle/ actions?

          Dictators make petty rules and cost/ social fairness hardly come into it!

          We DO need a system that looks after the poor, and provides facilities for them whether for Education, Health, Social Care and leisure.

          The wealthy fly on expensive jets, take multiple cruises and generally see that THEY are well looked after.

          As to the topic, I am sure that wealthy Chinese do not go without.... this is just another oppress the poor and be different from the West crackdown.

            First off I don't believe anyone here is really qualified to judge the Chinese authorities, unless you've lived in china for most of your life and know the politics from the poor side to the stinking rich side.

            Secondly, [i]wow what a surprise[/i], the Chinese authorities want further control over what their people do and say. That's the way China has been for a long while.

            Thirdly, you mean giving money to countries that use that money for buying arms not food isn't more important that looking after the homeless? WOW, baa *cough* hello, someone is looking at the real reality. I don't know much about the US but in the UK immigrants are treated better and have more rights than either the homeless or poor/disabled people. That might seem irrelevant but it?s what this government does where I live, they pay off debts of warring countries so they can get food for their starving people (honest sir we?ll buy food, oh... ...where did all these arms come from? :-)).

            illegal immigrants. They come here illegally, get medical, dental, financial assistance... oh and an education too. All on the legal residents tax dollars. Generally they do not pay into the system via taxes (see the illegal immigrant part) but still reap the benefits.

            Obama and his crew of idiots want to extend and increase what illegals can get for help and benefits. Meanwhile legal citizens that are struggling to make it, the ones the social services were designed to assist... they are being left behind.

          There was none, there were no protests, there were no massive threats to the Congress and Senate (by threats I mean, if you pass this you lose my vote, just to be clear on my intent) over the billions of taxpayer backed bailouts.

          And soon our new Socialist Prime Minister (can't call him a president really... not with the massive socialist programs he plans on implementing) will take office and with his crew of Socialist enforcers, they will attempt to finish off what's left of the Republic.

            and for the record, Ron Paul joined the Republican party so he could at least get nominated to run for President. No third party has ever had a chance in a system dominated by 2 parties. You should know better than to assume.

            Do a little research on the matter. Ron Paul is a Libertarian that ran as a Republican. It was the only reason he made it as far as he did. One other fact is look back and you will see that not one major contender would debate Ron Paul. They wouldn't debate him because they knew he would [B]NOT[/B] be drawn into the infantile sniping that ensued between McCain and Obama. They KNEW they would lose the debates because Ron Paul has solutions and would stick to the facts.

            The people that don't have a grasp on reality are the ones that watch the 20 second sound bites on the news and then decide an entire nations fate.

            As for failed policy's... better go back in history and learn. Not too far back either, but many of the failed policies are actually from Democrats... starting back in 1977 with the Community Reinvestment Act which was made more prominent and powerful by the Clinton administration (the same chuckleheads heading back into power...).

            This paved the way for the bad loans and unsecured debts that have all but obliterated our financial sector.

            Congressional Democrats along with ACORN, put the squeeze on banks as well as other financial institutions... the squeeze? Force them to issue sub-prime loans to high risk homebuyers. This sets the bubble in motion for the housing collapse.

            Once that is in motion these high risk loans are purchase by Uncle Sam via Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

            In 2005 the Republicans attempt to pass caps and enforce more oversight on Fannie and Freddie, but are blocked in the Senate by Senator Reid.... in 2006 McCain predicts financial meltdown if action is not take immediately...

            In the last 25 years there has been no significant deregulation so that is not the source of the problem and the solution is not more regulation either.

            The bottom line is it's time for the Libertarians to come in and clean house. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are capable and this has been proven the last 30 years.

            So you get what you wish for and that will be a Socialist nation where hard work doesn't pay off and the dream of building a better life is only that a dream. Sorry but I was raised in a nation that covets freedom and is about opportunity and if you make it then you get your just rewards, if you fail that's on you as well.

            Maybe you want to have mommy hold your hand and uncle sammy wipe your arse, but I don't. I worked damn hard to get where I am and I did it on my own. I don't see how you or anyone else can justify punishing me or others just because we worked hard to attain a level of income and a quality of life we enjoy.

            Your Utopian idea of this free-market capitalist society where you owe nothing to anyone fell flat on its face in 1929, period. It was a Democrat that had the foresight and wisdom to guide this country out of that mess coupled with massive government spending during WW-II.

            by starting in the military, served 14 years enlisted, so don't preach to me about sacrifice. I know all about sacrifice and earning my way. And I know all about public service as well. You don't know my past either, irony is I grew up for a good portion of my life in the projects as well, so don't give me that woe is me bullshyte. That dog don't hunt. What, you think I was born with a silver spoon and rich parents?

            Think again buddy, I grew up a poor white boy in an Asian dominated projects, slum whatever you want to call it. I know what it's like to go days without a hot meal. And I swore I would never live that life again. I am not asking for pity, I earned my way to where I am now. I did it and I didn't sluff off of the backs of others either to get where I am. I EARNED what I have by WORKING my arse off and doing whatever I could to get ahead.

            So before you start making assumptions about people and their backgrounds based on where they are today keep in mind many of us that are in the middle to upper middle class worked our arses off to get where we are. And in my case there was no help when I really needed it either I had to go it on my own. And you know what? It made me stronger and more resilient to have to make it on my own, it also made me more fiscally responsible as well. Everything I have I worked for and earned. Noone has a right to take that away from me regardless your justification.

            Ron Paul didn't succeed because he has actual solutions that would work. He didn't succeed because he wasn't allowed to take on Obama or McCain in any debates. Why was that? Because he would have kicked them to hell and back with sound reason and solid solutions. That's why, and they KNEW they couldn't win a debate with Ron Paul which means they couldn't win the election. So what we got was the typical idiocy that modern Americans seem to be enamored with. The bickering and sniping and the story of how much some Alaskan Governors wardrobe cost. The last presidential race was a farce, a show and nothing more.

            As for helping Ron Paul, I did and still am very active with the Libertarian party. But people wanted empty promises with huge price tags that will be their legacy to their children instead of a real solution to the fiscal problems, a real solution to the illegal war in Iraq and real solutions to many of the other issues we face today in this nation.

            And what social contract is that? I didn't learn about a social contract in school that mandated I be taxed for success due to hard work... no I remember this though:

            And nowhere in the Constitution does it define our "social contract" to the same effect. Charity is a voluntary effort, if I or anyone else chooses to donate, then that is our decision to do with what we own as we please. After all WE earned it.

            As for blaming the Democrats... your right the Republicans have their share of guilt in this mess we are in now as well. We have the two party system with corporate control to blame for this mess we are in. Obama and is cabinet will only exacerbate the problem. Did anyone ever stop to ask... where is the money coming from? You tax the rich and companies they will leave... and then who is left to tax? Oh... that's right the poor, because Obama will have finally succeeded in wiping out the middle class.

            I think the only one living in a fantasy world is you and other that blindly follow a junior senator that still hasn't explained how he intends to make his campaign promises come true. On top of that if you take your head out of the Obama smoke cloud you will see that in many ways he is already starting to back peddle on his promises.             If you do not understand what a social contract is then I cannot spend the time to teach you grade school Civics. The Constitution implies a lot of things, which is why we have a Supreme court. But thanks for the copy and paste. VERY enlightening.

            You know how I know it sucks when you draw the shortest straw at birth? I lived in a housing project for some of my teenage years with a single mother, but I was always poor. I am doing well now, because of student loans and the influence of my teachers over the years.

            I will never turn my back on those in need because I know how hard it is, not the other way around, "I don't care if other people have a chance because I made it."

            so it's a draw, and they didn't give me the job... I had to earn it, like everything else in life. I had to pass the ASVAB with a score high enough to get the job I got, I had to pass the physical requirements, the drug screening, the psychological evaluation and of course... boot camp. They gave me an [I]opportunity[/I] to either succeed or fail at getting the job. Just like any other employer out there. I still had to work for it and earn the right to work for the military.

            There is a massive difference to giving someone a chance, an opportunity to succeed than just giving them benefits and pay for nothing. Essentially what is being proposed is taking from those that have earned their way and giving it to those that have not. Wrong solution, right solution is giving opportunity to those that are in need and not punishing and forcing those that have already succeed (higher taxes and such) and taking their hard earned money and giving it away.

            You want to solve the problems the first step is to absolve the IRS and institute a flat tax of 10-15% across the board. No write offs, no loop holes just a flat 10-15% federal tax that is FAIR and equitable for all income levels. Next step is to kill the power many corporations have and roll them back to their original charter. This removes special interest groups from lobbying the Senate and Congress which again skews political power for those that can afford it. This also levels the playing field and puts the power of the government back into the peoples hands.

            These are some of the solutions Ron Paul has in mind. But no, the Democrats and some Republicans would rather penalize those that are successful so that those that haven't either made the effort or refuse to make an effort or are not even legal citizens will reap the benefit. That is counter intuitive to a free nation where you or anyone can aspire to be or do whatever your heart calls for.

            Socialism and social programs cost money, it's not fair to those that have put an effort into making a better life for themselves to support those that haven't or won't. Your social programs breed apathy and laziness. There is no incentive to succeed or even make an effort to change. Why should they? After all, uncle sammy will pay for everything!

            Now before you decided to toss my military service and what I earned while in that service back at me, understand that I was putting my life up as collateral for the job. What are you or any other socialist minded individual willing to put on the line for a better life? What are you willing to sacrifice to move yourself out of your lot in life.

            I know a lot of people that had it worse than I and using the same methods of busting their arse and applying themselves they moved from being dirt poor to having a decent life and providing for their children as well.

            As for you being done with this conversation, that's because you are fighting an untenable fight. Keep in mind that Obama will renege on many of his promises once in office, it's the way of the Democrat and Republican parties. When you look at actual performance in the job, Ron Paul is one of a very few people that actually has performed honorably and with integrity. He has also been consistent in his voting and where he stands on a variety of issues. That's something that Obama cannot say either. His voting and stance on gun control for instance is completely out of line with his campaign rhetoric, and that's just one item. Go ahead run away, just like your candidate did when Ron Paul challenge him to a debate.

            Ron Paul is a libertarian conservative who believes in minimal government. He votes according to what he believes are the legislative guidelines provided by the U.S. Constitution. He believes that most modern law-making is unconstitutional and the United States should not participate in foreign wars, except when under direct attack.

            and SURPRISE!! I'm also one of the supposedly disenfranchised poor and disabled.

            I took responsibility for my own life and worked to earn disability benefits, the government has nearly flubbed that totally up, but I EARNED it, and even I donate to help the poor and give my money to help buddies who are also disabled and the poorest among us.

            LINUX USER IS RIGHT! WE need to take responsibility, to help the poor DIRECTLY. To HECK with the government, we don't need no stinking goverment to help our brothers man!!

        Of course its your responsibility to block porn but what about the bombardment that you get from anyway even if you have NEVER downloaded and medication, watches info, pron etc. These things kreep in from the internet and that has to be stopped!! That is where Google and every other search engine has a responsibility to stop UNWANTED and UNREQUESTED pron. They are abdicating their responsibility and must be forced to do more. Porn channels must be kept seperate and be properly identified as such, then filetered out for those who are doing genuine research into legitimate subjects.

          Have you discussed that with them? Unlike automobiles, providing safety is something you will have to do. One other thing is Google provides a brief summary of content in text form when you do a search. If you are too lazy to bother to read these before you click then it's on you.

          You also have other options for searching. As with anything else in life there is always a risk of something happening counter to your expectations. Get in your car, expect to drive to work... wake up in a hospital being told you are lucky to have survived that semi slamming into you.

          If you want safety and security then lock yourself in a padded cell and eat your food through a straw. Part of life is risk and freedom is not free or without danger. ]:)

          Also I wanted to ad that since using Linux with Mozilla Firefox I have not had problems with drive by installs or pop-up porn ads. As for e-mail same thing, by using a little intelligence and a smidge of common sense I don't get spam either. It's not that hard... all it takes is a little effort on your side.

          And therein is the problem with most Americans today... they want without effort or sacrifice. Sorry life doesn't work that way. ]:)

        • I'm a Windows user and I don't have a problem...

          I use my email responsibly and I get hardly an email a month that is mostly Viagra junk and such.

          It is actually very easy to keep one's email and computer cleaned up, it just takes some common sense and a few good freeware utilities.

          I use freeware almost exclusivly because it actually works better than 85% of the payware out there. Where they ask for donations I give a few dollars when I can.

        I agree it should be up to the user to decide whether they want such material to be filtered, but we need better working tools to do that filtering. As it is, we have competing add-ons that try to do this and generally fail, because porn is pushed quite hard via pop-ups etc.

        So the "regulatory" role would involve mandatory marking of porn so that you can filter it properly, without buying anything extra - in other words, the government's role would be to enable your right to filter.
