Now there's a switch: New Belkin surge protector timed to power down certain outlets

By | September 29, 2009, 10:15am PDT

This post is about one of those small gadgets that could make a lot of difference when it comes to your Green IT profile: a surge protector with a timer.

Belkin’s new Conserve Surge with Timer, which carries a retail price of $34.99 (about $7 more than a typical surge protector) is pretty much what you would expect: an eight-outlet strip; two of the outlets are always on, the other six can be controlled and switched off with a button. Whenever the strip is turned on, it will automatically turn off the power to those controllable outlets after an 11-hour cycle (or about the time someone might be hunkered down at their desk). An LED will blink if you’re approaching shutdown.

Cliff Unger, senior product manager for Belkin, says the motivation for the product was pretty simple. Make it easier for businesses to ensure that as much computer equipment (speakers, monitors, printers, scanners) as possible is turned off at night. Typically, you would plug the CPU into one of the always-on outlets, so that piece of equipment will still be sipping away at the electricity overnight and on the weekends when you’re hopefully not there. But heck, it’s a start. And since most people buy power strips anyway, it’s a green selling point for Belkin.

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I am also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.

I'm all for chasing down every single last watt, so long as the price is reasonable. Conservation pays the greatest dividends.

But for all of the effort put into making these "green" power strips, the designers lack creativity. There should be a calendar and day-of-week function, not just an idle/timeout meter.

The spec sheet suggests that "monitors" can be shut off completely. Sorry, but that doesn't work in today's home, where TV screens and "monitors" are one in the same.

An interesting device

I am not sure how much this would save. I think it is a good idea, but it is a band-aid approach.

My PC only draws 2.4 watts when it is sleeping and I would not want to remove all power to it and have it reboot (45 seconds) as opposed to just wake up (2 secs). I really don't care about saving $0.85 per year.

It does make sense for my laser printer as it draws 23 watts while sleeping. So, this surge protector would save me about $8.35/year.

The largest vampires in my house are the 3 cable boxes and they should not be powered off according to Belkin.

What really needs to happen is for all electronic device manufacturers to make all their devices Energy Star-compliant.
I use several timers such as a hot water heater timer and outdoor accent lighting timers.
Printers and such should be left off till you need them if they are not used very often, like if you use it only every few days or so.
That strip would be useful if someone had several chargers.
Over night charging then off to work and it shuts them off in a couple more hours.
Save money and just buy a timer for any old power strip.
You know, those white plastic timers with the dial and the on/off pegs.
Nice idea though.
