Promisec software added to PG&E power rebate list

By | May 25, 2010, 2:49pm PDT

Endpoint management vendor Promisec, which also happens to include agent-less power client hardware management features in its software, has been added to the list of products that are eligible for certain energy-efficiency rebates from Pacific Gas & Electric. The reason that this is interesting is not only the fact that Promisec manages power on your desktops without introducing agent software onto the systems, it also can be used to manage other setting, most notably security.

That’s something that Marc Brungardt, executive vice president of operations for Promisec, is counting on as a competitive advantage. Because many CIOs don’t actually have control over their power budget, he notes, many of the energy-efficiency rebate pools have gone unused. But because they DO care about cutting the cost of endpoint management, the power management capability becomes an added benefit.

Basically, what this new relationship means is that if you are a business customer of PG&E, you can get a rebate of $15 per computer if you can prove you are using Promisec to manage power consumption on your desktop computers. Of course, you’ll also save an additional sum of $40 to $50 per computer by using the software in the first place to make sure that idle systems are not consuming unnecessary electricity. You DO have to prove usage over a period of time to earn the rebate.

So, you have to be in California to care about this particular Promisec rebate. But are you sure your business isn’t eligible for one in your home state?

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I am also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.
