SAP, CarbonFund spruce up sustainability management software

By | October 8, 2010, 7:08am PDT

Summary: While SAP’s solution is focused on the enterprise, Carbon ExpressTrack could help smaller companies get a handle on their impact.

To supplement my post earlier this week about an upgrade for the Hara Energy and Environmental Management application, wanted to note that two other applications that fall into the carbon management environmental software category have also been updated in the past few weeks. Both of the applications are offered as an on-demand service.

The first, SAP Carbon Impact OnDemand, is clearly targeted at enterprise-type companies. Version 5.0 of the software includes the following changes:

  • Language support for 50 different countries
  • Automated data collection capabilities that pull information from metering systems, utility systems dashboards and third-party applications, notably the SAP ERP enterprise resource planning application
  • Increased support for the regulatory requirements of carbon registries and authorities including the Carbon Disclosure Project and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  • Benchmarking capabilities that let you compare, for example, the energy profile of one facility against comparable sites around the world

The other software update, from Carbonfund.org, is intended for smaller companies that are looking for an “affordable and accessible” solution for carbon reporting. The application, called Carbon ExpressTrack, allows SMBs to upload information about utility consumption, fleet metrics, travel behavior and other things that might affect energy usage. The reports you can create with Carbon ExpressTrack comply with the WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the EPA Climate Leaders Greenhouse Gas Inventory. Carbonfund.org, which is a non-profit organization, currently is offering a $59.99 per month subscription for the product.

Writing publicly about what the high-tech industry is actually doing to help itself and the world get greener or more sustainable is one way I figure I can contribute more meaningfully to said effort. I am also a big OMG-kind-of-fan of smart leadership, which is why the goodly folks who publish this blog let me go on about this topic and why I am always on the hunt for forward-looking business management ideas.

My daily writing is focused on looking for topics for my blogs, GreenTech Pastures and Business Brains. I also write often about emerging technology trends such as mobile computing, unified communications and cloud computing. Occasionally, I will pop up at an industry conference in some sort of speaking capacity. In cases where a speaking engagement involves a sponsor that may be covered in this blog, that fact will be disclosed in coverage as appropriate.

My corporate writing work usually consists of crafting research white papers about some aspect of technology. In the event that my commentary (in written, audio or video form) mentions a company for which I have provided consulting advice, I will disclose that fact. However, there is no connection between these projects and the topics that I am covering in my blog.

Crikey SAP can't even get their flagship software to run smoothly and now they want to try this crap? It's a nice thought but I think I'll pass, thanks.
