Rumors are circulating that Seagate is developing a 3TB enterprise class hard drive that will ship later this year.

The 3TB drive will form part of Seagate's Constellation ES line of drives which will replace the Barracuda ES line later in the year and will feature a 6Gbit/s and spin at 7,200RPM. Currently these enterprise class drives max out at 2TB, so the capacity bump should be welcomed by those who've maxed out their current storage.

Currently 2TB drives make use of four platters that can each hold 500GB. The race now it to develop either 640GB and 750GB platters, allowing for four-platter 2.5TB drives and 3TB drives respectively.

Also coming is a 1TB capacity 2.5-inch drive, which will offer a capacity boost over current offerings by Toshiba and Western Digital.
