For a few days now I've been receiving information from previously credible sources that the rumored Apple tablet will be called iPad. But no solid proof. Now MacRumors and MacNN have dug about in trademark databases and made some interesting discoveries.

The Canadian shows an application for the iPad trademark from a company called Slate Computing, LLC, a company believed to be a dummy corporation belonging to Apple. On top of that, there have been similar application filed for Europe and Hong Kong, while in Australia and New Zealand a company called IP Application Development (initials of which spell out IPAD) has applied for a similar trademark.

What about the US? Well, in the US the iPAD trademark is held by Fujitsu and applies to a point-of-sale device. Would that stop Apple from calling their device iPad? Unlikely given that the iPhone trademark was initially held by Cisco at the time Apple launched the device.

So, putting all the information from tipsters together with these findings, along with other rumors that I've been hearing, I'm 95% convinced that Apple's tablet will be called iPad. But that still leaves a 5% chance that Apple will throw us a curve-ball, and its a company good at throwing those!

Whaddya think?

Don't even know anything about the device!

    • Thats what I thought.

These things really don't have a big market I agree. Only thing I can think is Apple may make a market out of sheep, but not the stock bustng everyone has been thinking. I also wonder how much the stock has gone up on this marketless news? Buy, Buy, Buy. Now.

  • The option shouldn't have been "No idea"

you should have gone with "iHavenoidea" :)

  • I'd bet real money it won't be the iPad

Pads already have a well established meaning in the eyes of embarrassed men in the feminine hygiene isle.

    • Will it have wings?

I had the same thought. The iTablet sounds like something you would take for an iheadache. The iSlate sounds like something Fred and Barney would use. The iCandy sounds too cute. I like the iPatch, argh!

Apple has noted that the iPod Touch has mostly been used as a gaming machine. This new iThing will be an extension of that purpose with other media thrown in (movies, music, books, TV episodes, etc.). I expect there will be less emphasis on Email, chatting and web surfing.

This will be a vehicle to buy into (be sucked into) the Apple media ecosystem. It will be for purchasing and viewing games, books, music, videos, movies. All (or at least most), will be distributed through Apple, not through 3rd parties.

Expect some big media avaialability announcement to go along with the hardware - perhaps new movies, games, book publishers, book reading software built into iTunes, etc. The media annoncement may come first with the "one more thing" iThingy at the end.

Based on the Jackson Pollock style painting in the style of "action painting" on the invite, I'm guessing it will be...I don't know.

  • I'd go with iSlate

And I'll wait for a while before considering spending
    money on one.

But I'll be surprised if it isn't successful. One only has to
look at the growth rate and success levels of the iPod,
iPod touch and iPhone to understand that Apple CAN
develop and deploy very successful products.

My thinking is that Apple's tablet/slate will be sufficiently
different than the CES releases, and will be sufficiently
consumer oriented to be a very desirable product.

Now I'll just wait until the initial dust settles before
    buying.

  • I think . . .

that there's going to be a lot of people who, while dropping $500 on an ipod/iphone isn't a problem, are going to think twice about dropping a G-note on this thing unless it's a full--bore computer . . .

  • I hope it's not "iPad"

"iPad" sounds like something ladies need once a month.
