Blockbuster to file for "pre-planned bankruptcy" - The latest victim of our move to a digital existence

By | August 27, 2010, 11:41am PDT

It seems that Blockbuster video/DVD rental chain is lumbering one step closer to oblivion as it plans to file for something it calls “pre-planned bankruptcy.” The company is the latest victim of our move to a digital, ethereal existence.

The company is in a pretty deep hole, and hopes that Chapter 11 will give it some breathing room:

Blockbuster is hoping to use its time in Chapter 11 to restructure a crippling debt load of nearly $1 billion and escape leases on 500 or more of it 3,425 stores in the U.S. Maintaining the support of Hollywood’s film studios during the process will be critical so that Blockbuster can continue to rely upon an uninterrupted supply of new DVDs.

Blockbuster has lost a total of $1.1 billion since the beginning of 2008 and has been severely hamstrung in efforts to grow its business due to interest payments on $920 million in debt. Earlier this month the company announced that most of its debt holders had agreed to a forbearance on interest payments until Sept. 30, during which time it would attempt a recapitalization.

Last year alone, Blockbuster shuttered almost 1,000 stores. The company plans to branch out to DVD rental kiosks if it survives restructuring.

The flaw in Blockbuster’s business model is that it’s failed to keep up with the times. The days of people driving down to a video store (even the name is archaic) to pick a movie are, well, gone. Just like having photos developed, buying physical CDs and books , and visiting the bank, people are turning to a digital way of life. Even Netflix, which started life as a company mailing DVDs to customers, has had to evolve.

That’s how it is now - evolve, or die.

There are still a lot of things that need to fall into place before streaming really takes off, but the decline of the rental store will definitely help things along.

@stevek@... Anybody that is near a "Red Box" vending machine!! Rent first release and popular movies for a dollar a day (or night)? Sure it requries a credit or debit card, but for what Blockbuster charges I am able to get 2 -3 movies! Thus the writing on the wall for DVD and VCR movies. Not just Blockbuster, several local shops and small chains are now gone! It's NOT just a matter of digital downloads, when a Cola sized vending machine placed at the corner convienience store gives me what I want, and I don't have to hook a PC up to my TV to do it, I'm happy.

The 800 pound gorilla wakes up... they heavily leveraged their Canadian stores (the last profit center in the organization) to guarantee renewed contracts with CBS and others - now 3 months later it's a "pre-planned bankruptcy"... who could have known?

We still buy CD's and DVD's, haven't rented one recently. Would like to rent an old set of Fu ManChu movies to watch, I saw a few while in the Air Force over thirty years ago, and want to see more. I could break down and buy, I suppose, but usually purchase is for something you want to watch more than once.
Blockbuster got undercut in their pricing and selection by the likes of Hastings bookstores, which has more than movies and CD's to sustain it. Consumers are always looking for th ebest price, so why pay $5-$10 for a rental, when it is available elsewhere for less? Besides with just the newest on the shelf, you don't attract all comers. I would like to find a rental store with every movie out on DVD to find that rare one.
I haven't been in a Blockbuster store but a few times and not recently at all. In many cases of bankruptcy it is th ecompany's own fault--not giving the customer what they wanted. Didn't BB have a digital/online rental either physical disks or in software?

Blockbuster online get 3 dvds in mail watch them and go to block buster turn in the mailed dvds at the store pick out 3 more in store, go home. watch 6-7 movies a week for 19.95 per month. If you want a blu-ray online no extra charge. Want one in store? $1 plus & online exchange DVD. I have been doing that for over 2 years. I watch 20-30 per month. Exchange 1 on friday. return & fridays exchange + exchange online for another Dvd. If you go to blockbuster every other day, it is rare that you dont have something to watch. Besides that's where I get my Neccos.

Their selection of movies available streaming online is far superior to Netflix. They just don't have the right packaging to promote and maintain people using the online function, I suppose.

It has nothing to do with the interface. It has to do with the fact that they charge you for each movie that you stream, this on top of your monthly subscription price. Netflix does not. Huge difference.

I haven't been to Blockbuster's in a while because I've been spending my idle time reading - real books, not digital But when I decide I want to watch a movie, I want to do it now. I don't mind the drive to the 'video store' but I certainly don't want to have to order and wait for mail delivery of it. Watch it on my computer? No thanks, that what I recently bought a big screen tv for. Also, still occasionally have photos developed. Sometimes it's a lot more convenient and less time-consuming to have someone else do it and drive to the store to pick them up. Guess I'm just not 'with it' in the electronic age. Any more out there like me?

@sanderson_z Um there are like at least 5 devices I can think of that you can watch Netflix on that are specifically designed to hook up to your big screen TV and not your computer. There are probably a lot more I don't even know about. Some of them can be had for less than $100. $9/month for a crap load of TV and movies available at the drop of the hat on your big screen TV. Yeah, that sounds just horrible. Who would want that? Now playing discs that have been used by 20 other people who scratched the crap out of it cause 'hey it's not their DVD' sounds wonderful. @sanderson_z I, too, am much like you. I read real books, and papers as well as do some writing. Sometimes I even use a real typewriter instead of my computer. Also, I not only will have pictures developed at a photo store, but I also have myself setup to do the developing, and processing myself for some special investigative photographic applications. As for movies, I also want to watch them when I want, and on my TV, not PC. Whereas I have not cared much for the prices at BB, I do have a good movie rental store here that I am more than willing to drive to for what I want, when I want. And all this I do while I am a FCC licensed electronics tech. After many years one sometimes just gets burned out on technology.

@DJnRF It's good to know I'm not alone out here. We luddites have to stick together! Forgot about the newspaper angle, as I sit here waiting for the daily delivery. Can't say I use a typewriter (gave mine away years ago), but I really don't miss it, what with spell check and all. Do wish I had had that when I was in college trying to earn a few extra $$ typing for others. And, you're right about the prices at BB - now comes Red Box.

There is a nifty little device called a "roku", that interfaces between your high-speed internet connection (wired or wireless), and your big screen tv (HDMI/Component/s-video). It also connects with Netflix, Rhapsody, and a lot of other video/music providers. The HD version of roku costs about 90 bucks. You really should check it out.

Stupid ZDNet Forums... 2nd try
Independent Voter 27th Aug 2010
Yes, Blockbuster has an online service similar to NetFlix. When originally launched, it was actually much better than NetFlix because they smartly integrated store options for those that so wanted (i.e. you could return your mailed copy to a store and get a free movie rental from the store, or simply mail it back... your choice).

All in all, I thought it was a pretty good blend of NetFlix-style mail and streaming, combined with honest-to-goodness value that got you into their stores, too.

Sadly, as time went on, they made the plan less valuable but charged you more. For example, you used to get a monthly email coupon good for a free movie or game rental at a store. That was a good deal, because a game rental is normally $8 and my monthly plan fee was only $9.99. The new plans don't have that, but charge you more.

Their penalty fee structure revealed their weakness and flawed business model from the outset. Needlessly punishing paying customers due to a zero tolerance policy creates ill will. They lost my business essentially because of a 1 minute late return. No forgiveness from them started my personal boycott.

Artty Sie 27th Aug 2010
@djchandler Totally agree, I think this penalty fixation of the rental stores is one of the key reasons more and more people start to download their movies from torrent sites. Often they have movies not even available on DVD yet (ripped screeners). Long term the only fee structure that makes sense is a flat tax on media (DVD, USB), the rest will go extinct.

slacker400 Updated - 27th Aug 2010
I hate to see AS400 heavy operations falter since it strikes another nail in my professional coffin. But...

I'm a huge movie guy and made at least two trips a week to video stores from the time I was 12 until 30. Now I simply dread and avoid the video store when the internet or mail order services are available.

Why would I drive across town? To find out the movie I want to watch is still out of stock or not carried anymore. Netflix mails it to my house within 1 business day or even better streams in HD to my TV. Also on-demand with cable or sat. I can watch a new movie instantly for 4 bucks with TimeWarner.

Does anyone remember the lines at a video store on a Friday night? I remember 45 minute checkout waits being the norm at Blockbuster. I want my life back!

Rude know-it-all slacker clerks. Yeah chump looks like your gonna have to shave the pube beard off and apply for a job at the GAP or investment banking. Telling me that my movie choices are weak might be funny in a Kevin Smith film...

So Blockbuster will go the way of the record store. One less slacker dream job and a piece of Americana dead. The masses won't even notice/miss the institution.

"The company is the latest victim of our move to a digital, ethereal existence."

Just to be straight "our" in your post above is exactly who?

Who are the other implied "victims"?

You may be "ethereal" the rest of us have to work for a living, and in this economy it's tough.

Wake up Adrian and take a few technology courses. DVDs and CDs are DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY and Blockbuster is just a business which after riding the analog VHS tape wave jumped on the DVD digital wave and did not have the intelligence or sense to hire the intelligence to know what to do next and when to do it.

RE: Blockbuster to file for
brad1000 27th Aug 2010
@attoman
truth is that he is right. Netflix has got together with multiple media outlets and manufacturers so that it could integrate its video offerings to you in more ways than just plopping a dvd in an outdated dvd player.

With netflix, i am able to watch movies on my big screen tv straight from netflix using my xbox 360. It does not stop there, as netflix offers other ways such as the WII, playstation 3, settop box that only costs $70, through some of the newer tvs with it built in.
Netflix, of course, also allows you to stream it to your pc. It really does not take a rocket scientist, nor a whole lot of money to connect your pc to your tv which is the case for me.

Blockbuster just plainly failed at keeping up with the times. Their best method of delivery still remains their box store, and that is sad. Who wants to have to add another stop to a person's busy day when they can simply have it delivered to them in one day or instantly with online streaming?

Price wise it is simply 9 dollars for netflix and you get the whole thing.

Now with redbox out at every grocery store and having the lead jump on the idea, it will be awfully hard for blockbuster to remain afloat unless they drastically alter their offering so that it would be more convenient and cheaper for customers, otherwise there is better fish to be had in the pond.

@attoman I think he was referring to the public in general. We are becoming more and more less prone to leave the house to get a movie or to do our banking. Sure the economy is tough, that's why nobody has the energy to leave the house after a 12 - 15 hour work day.
Blockbuster is a victim of their own arrogance. They are the pompous ones who would nickel and dime you during the VHS days. Forget to rewind? That's going to cost you. Missed bringing back your tape by a few minutes? You're paying for another day, even though it's in the return bin. They were the only game in town for a long time and never planned on the future. They spent tons of money on promoting their name, but not their services.

Don't be so sensitive when someone refers to the general public as "our". You need to take a mental health day off of work.

I Hate the BB website....slow, tedious and I usually log out before making the selections I want. The increased fees with less "return" is a definite turn-off.

RE: Blockbuster to file for
martinherr@... 27th Aug 2010
I was absolutely confused by the way they reacted to Netflix, etc. They started their own competing website, and they tried to integrate it with going to their physical locations. They then raised the prices for that service, and removed the incentive to go to their physical locations. Finally they increased their rental prices at the physical locations. Why would drive to their store, pay $5/rental, which I am only going to watch once (but the rental is for 5 days - just enough time to drive back and return it), when I can click a few buttons and not worry about driving anywhere to/from, pay $3-4/rental, and get the identical experience (without any hassle).

Blockbuster dug its own grave early on
terry flores 27th Aug 2010
Blockbuster's demise is mostly about their failed business model and sheer arrogance. Their profit margins were based on excessive late charges, high markups on impulse buys, and cutbacks of in-store inventory. At the same time Blockbuster was looking to squeeze customers, new companies like Netflix and Redbox were giving customers new choices and better values. It's no wonder that the customers deserted them in droves.

Couple that with a management that continued to make poor financial decisions even while rewarding themselves exorbitantly, and you have a classic business meltdown.

Blockbuster's problems were already killing it before streaming video really became anything more than an experiment. If anything, online services could have been a method of rescuing the company, but again their management continued to squander opportunities as they robbed their own company blind. I have absolutely no sympathy for them.

The last time I enjoyed going ta a video store
unclefixer@... 27th Aug 2010
was in 1986, it wasn't even a video store- it was really more of an "old west store" in Hill City, South Dakota- They didn't have the newest releases, but they had a lot of movies I liked- and more than that, the people who owned the store were very nice, there was never a line, and if you called them and told them you wouldn't be able to get the movie back on time, they would say it's ok, and thanks for calling... as long as it didn't become a habit, all was good. I honestly would have paid twice what they charged-
I learned how to dislike blockbuster very quickly, and though I never wish ill will on any person, company, etc, I think they could have done some things different a long time ago that would have helped now.

timothyt@... 27th Aug 2010
Blockbuster was still charging horrendous late fees when everyone else wasn't. They eventually had to give that up. Then Netflix had the by-mail approach and Blockbuster resisted, then eventually came up with a more expensive, but not bad model where you could rent by mail and in-store, but then they took away the in-store part, the ONE thing that differentiated them from Netflix. They then copied Gamestop with GameFly, but it was never really embraced by the company so it never really took off. I can't imagine why anyone would invest more in them. Their whole history has been "follow competitors and exploit customers" - good riddance!

You're forgetting the joy of the whole Blockbuster experience... sticky carpets, stale overpriced candy, the smell of ages-old popcorn stains mixed with teenage desperation and cannabis-impregnated clothing... it's just like going to the theater only without the joy of ever-shrinking screens and the guy in front of you with huge hair that reeks of tobacco smoke. What about those area's that don't have good broadband yet? They can't stream movies with some wonky 1.5mb connection. It's as glitchy as watching DirectTV during a hurricane. And God help those rural people with dailup.

I dont believe streaming a Blu-ray during prime time will be practical. I rarely ever got close to 6mbs (1.7mbs max) on a good day from AT&T. When I questioned them about it they said it was because I wasn't subscribing to the 24 mbps service. so lets if this makes sense. cant garantee that will get or even reach 24 mbps. got to pay 60% more & probably wont change anything. Blu-ray content = 18 Gb? 1 byte = 8 bits 8 x 18gb = 144G bits. Giving that a theroetical 24mb could possibly happen, 144,000mbits /24 = 6000 seconds. 6000/60 = 100 minutes or 1hr 40 minutes. But the actual speed average is about 1.2mbps from 12mn to 7am and gets slower as the goes by. The reality is 10-12 hrs download vs 30 minute round trip to blockbuster. a dvd that is being read for viewing reading running 0.9 Gbytes (7.2 bits). So far the infrastructure is not keeping up. Steve Jobs introduction of the I-pad was a no go because his wireless connection was plugged up. That is pretty typical of any internet connection. block buster wont go away but will most probably shrink.

1x fee to get the roku box; netflix membership as low as $10 a month for the streaming with 1,000s of movies, tv shows, etc. INSTANTLY y go to a store that has hours, may not have what you want, charge you a shelfing charge if you are past their return date? I can't stream movies via my Xbox 360 with Blockbuster- that was the catalyst that sparked my wife and I's migration to Netflix. I was a big fan of the in-store exchanges, though- there's something to be said for being able to browse in a store and find random, unexpected flicks than just searching via the web.
Oh well... just another sign of the times, eh?
