Without a doubt the coolest feature of VMware Player 3.0 RC is its ability to create virtual machines as well as run them. That now puts VMware Player freeware up there with VirtualBoxand the like.

Along with the ability to create virtual machines, VMware Player 3.0 RC has the following features:

  • OpenGL support in guest machines
  • ALSA support on Linux guests
  • Windows 7 support
  • Multiple monitor support

All in all, a really cool bit of freeware.

Note that in order to get the download you'll need to create an account with VMware, which is pretty painless.

  • Compiz support for linux guest?

Anyone know if VMware or Virtualbox does this yet?

  • Create vms...

If you can create VMs, what is the limit on this? Why is it still "player" - or is it a virtual PC-like product now?

Great piece of software. Tried the player out, and then did a linux 64 bit. Worked great until I tried to install a Firefox 3.5 version. I must be a dumbo I spent an hour, and never did get it to work. So much for my Linux attempt, but Vmware was great.
