I've been asked several times over the past few days about how to wipe an iPad/iPhone/iPod touch ready for resale. Instead of repeating myself over and over, I thought that a post was in order.

It's in fact dead easy ...

Tip: Remember to do a backup via iTunes first ... there's no going back from a wipe!

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

The same process works for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

Tip: Make sure your iPad is plugged into a power source while erasing.

Now, the security conscious out there will be keen to know how the erasure is carried out. To satisfy you folks, I found this on the Apple website:

When you opt to "Erase All Content and Settings," the process can take up to several hours. The time this process takes will vary by device:

Devices that support hardware encryption: Erases user settings and information by removing the encryption key to the data. This process takes just a few minutes. Devices that overwrite memory: Overwrites user settings and information, writing a series of ones to the data partition. This process can take several hours, depending on the storage capacity of your iPhone or iPod touch. During this time, the device displays the Apple logo and a progress bar.

iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod touch 3rd and 4th gen support hardware encryption.

      • How to wipe iPhone, i know a method!

      • The data can be recovered by data recovery software!

All ios devices that support iOS 5 or later use hardware encryption! (both "Restore" and "Erase All Content and Settings")
That means the deleted data can be recovered by data recovery software!
That't why more and more people use safe-eraser to wipe iPhone,iPad,iPod before resale.

  • You are asking for trouble when erase all

This process can take hours...It can hang (like it did on mine) and you may need to put it in DFU mode to restore. It is much safer and simple to just restore as new with iTunes. iTunes will install latest version and erase all your setting. It is also much faster too. After restoring just go to setting, store and sign out of your Apple ID if it retained that info.

This news shows how dumb people using Apple products are...just grab whatever is thrown at you by Apple and live in the fairy world that there is nothing better in the world...

@swiftsmile Kind of like AOL Windows users, the average one is too stupid to know how to format a thumb drive.

@Brick Tamland. the gulf between us tech-heads and the average user is immense. I'm no longer surprised by how big the gulf is anymore.

        @Brick Tamland.
        You format thumb drives? Why?

I wouldn't let any average user anywhere near the format command. In modern Windows there is very little need to ever use it.

So, should all aspects of computing be just for geeks? The Holy Order of Geek Priests? Miss those white coated days of toting other's lives in boxes of Hollerith cards do we? You might want to check the arrogance at the door as we are in a brave new world where 'average' people get to make use of technology. That doesn't mean they're stupid. It means they're smart enough to buy products that don't require learning assembly code or how to use a soldering iron.
Making good use of technology has always been the purview of the average person. While we geeks live out our lonely lives criticizing them from our basement holes sweating over the latest permutation of some breadboard designed to make other's lives easier, those are the people who actually pay the bills. Consumers.

  • Moving Apps?

I have a 2nd Gen. iPod Touch, and a 4th Gen. on order from the Apple web site. How do I move paid apps from the old to the new?

I'll probably keep the old one in my car.

  • Major problem with this...

I just reset everything, and it all got wiped like it should have, but when I double checked iTunes on my ipod Touch, my username and password were STILL in there and logged in! So, I logged out and did the reset again.
