Hardware 2.0

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes

"Intel Inside" your iPhone and iPad

By | August 31, 2010, 3:56am PDT

Another long-standing rumor becomes reality as chip giant Intel continues to fling cash about as part of its acquisitions orgy. The latest assimilation - Infineon’s WLS wireless division.

The takeover is valued at $1.4 billion. It gives Intel a significant foothold in the mobile market.

Infineon is currently ranked #4 in cellular-baseband shipments in 2009, with the company grabbing an impressive 10.7% unit share. The company supplies the baseband silicon that allows the iPhone and iPad to connect to 3G networks. Infineon also supplies silicon to companies like Nokia and Samsung.

Interestingly Apple is becoming increasingly reliant on Intel, which the chip giant now also supplying all the CPUs for the company’s Mac range of desktops and notebooks.

One consequence of this deal, resulting in Apple being further tied to Intel, could be the possibility that Apple now goes off an acquires a comms chip maker of its own, like it did for the processor in the iPhone and iPad. That way the company secures a greater portion of the supply chain.

The board of directors of Intel, along with the supervisory board and the management board of Infineon have all OK-ed the deal. The deal is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2011.

the title

Is a little misleading. I read it assuming that the iPhone and iPad would be running Intel CPUs. But its just about the wireless accusation. I give u props for the catchy title though.

misleading would be them telling u it was the wireless chips halfway through.... however u learned it was the wireless chip in the 2nd sentence.

@NStalnecker

You'll either have to wait for MS to compile (and scale) Windows 7 to run on ARM or for Intel to put out a low power mobile chip that allows decent battery life, then you'll have to wait for Apple to up the RAM to 2 gigs so that Windows can at least start, then wait for the sun to explode or Hell to freeze over; which ever happens first.

@bspurloc

Any modern graphics adapter would do. I can run full AERO on my netbook....

@NStalnecker why would you ever need Win 7 on mac mobile hardware?
I think Apple would put a prevision that melts the hardware if Win 7 is detected on its mobile devices.

IMHO the acquired technology fits well with Intel Core processor-based laptop technology, and Atom processor-based devices, including smartphones, netbooks, tablets and embedded computers.
This (pending approvals) acquisition expands Intel's current Wi-Fi and 4G WiMAX offerings to include Bluetooth ICs, GPS ICs, 3G Tuner ICs and wireless base station components, plus it will allow the acquired Infineon wireless solutions the funding it surely needs.

Infineon is incompetent
desmo4 31st Aug 2010
While working for Infineon it became obvious they couldn't compete in any type of semiconductor production. When they were still producing RAM, they were sure photo resist in the metal stack was no problem.

Figures
Agnostic_OS 31st Aug 2010
@desmo4 that would explain the trading figures at Infineon.
The group's revenues declined from EU3,660 million to EU3,027 million during FY2007-09.
Operating losses rose EU220 million in FY2009(losses EU46 million in FY2008)
Wireless division generated EU917 million, accounting for 30.4% of the total revenues in FY2009. The 2009 revenue decrease was due to the overall declining performance of all group segments. this while competitors reported increasing revenues and profits.
So as I said before the jewel for Intel is the Wireless division, dump the rest.

I've heard Infineon is an ARM licensee. Their ARM capabilities may be a plan B backup if ATOM never makes it in mobiles.
