Hong Kong based parts supplier Truesupplier has what it claims to be an LCD panel from an iPad 3.

There's not an awful lot of information about the part other than it is an 'OEM LCD screen display for Apple iPad 3,' that is will be 'tested before shipment,' and it is 'high quality.'

Here's a photo.

There are more photos on the site, but none show any engravings or maker details. In fact, this sticker is the only ID I can see on the panel photos:

The panel retails for $122.99.

MacRumors have one of these panels in their possession and while they have no way to power it up, looking at it under microscope seems to show a pixel density twice that of the iPad 2, which would make it a 2048x1536 panel, as opposed to the 1024x768 panel on the iPad 2. However, give that there is no way to power this panel up to test that it works, it's hard to confirm whether it is a genuine part, a fake, or a panel from something else. Because of this I'm cautious about calling this a genuine part.

What do you think? Real or fake?

    • iPad 3 "battery life" will be the same or greater than iPad 2.

@Cylon Centurion A "retina display" may very well have greater power requirements, but if Apple uses it in an iPad 3 it won't have any net effect on usage time. Either the battery will be bigger/have more mAh or the rest of the system will be more power efficient to compensate. Apple simply doesn't take steps "backwards", especially on such a marquee feature as battery life.

The biggest draw of an LCD screen on battery life is its backlighting increasing the pixel count will not have as huge of an impact on battery life as many are thinking.

  • There were similar panels last year.

Started the whole Retina iPad thing. That and some artwork in files.

I will wait and see but it would not surprise me if they did not change the display.

I heard that owners of the iPad 2 will be able to take their iPad to an Apple store, and will be able to upgrade their display for $75! the kit consists of this display and a video module.

LOL. And I heard that if you put a stone under a napkin and sing "la cucaracha" while spinning around three times on one heel, it turns into a warm beef burrito.
