iTether: USB tethering app hits iTunes App Store

By | November 29, 2011, 1:45am PST

Summary: iTether available from the iTunes App Store for $14.99.

[UPDATE: And, just like that, it's gone! I told you to be quick!]

It seems that Apple has approved a USB tethering app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

The app is called iTether and is available for $14.99. No jailbreaking required!

I’ve been able to try this app out and it does exactly what what it ways on the tin. Seems to work very well.

Tether has previously released tethering software for BlackBerry and Android.

According to a post made on Twitter by Tether, the company got this into the App Store because it ‘played by the rules.’

The app is already the #1 top grossing app in the App Store and #3 in the UK.

Not sure whether this one slipped through Apple’s net or it’s a change of policy (I’m betting it’s the former, not the latter), but there’s a good chance it won’t be available for long, so if you want it, go get it!

A WORD OF WARNING: Unless your data plan specifically allows tethering, chances are using this app will violate the carrier’s terms and conditions. I point you to this excellent piece by James Kendrick to explain.

Thanks to everyone who sent me a link to this!

Doesn't work with iPad?
marthill 29th Nov
Adrian, it doesn't work with my iPad's 3G data connection. Can you confirm if you've tried it with an iPad 3G or only an iPhone?

(my iPhone 3GS already tethers over USB and Bluetooth so can't try it with that)

@marthill it works iPad to PC/Mac, not iPad to iPhone.
@Adrian Kingsley-Hughes
It is tethering my Mac laptop to my iPad 3G that does not work.

I only mentioned that tethering my laptop to my iPhone 3GS is already enabled as part of my cellphone contract to explain why I can't test the Tether app with my iPhone.

So it sounds like you've successfully tethered your laptop to your iPad 3G then? I wonder why mine doesn't work.

@marthill seeing any errors? I've sees mention of a few issues on Lion.
@Adrian Kingsley-Hughes
Got it working - you might want to mention there is a companion app you need to run on your PC or Mac at the same time the Tether app runs on the iOS device.

I'm getting a good 4.43Mbps down and 1.49Mbps up tethered to my iPad which is equipped with a Telstra NextG 3G SIM in central Sydney Australia.

Great stuff.

The article is not clear

Tethering from what to what? Or is this article meant only for the few insiders?

Yes, this is a content-free blog post intended only to alert you to the existence of an app, not to tell you what it is for, what it is useful with, or anything about why you'd want it. You are just supposed to know all that.
Ok it says "Your request could not be completed". Also searching for iTether brings up no matches. So that didn't last long....
It's been pulled from the app store. https://twitter.com/#!/Tethercom/status/141583480441143296

I got it earlier. I guess I need to sync the app to my Mac.
