Last minute geek gift ideas

By | December 22, 2009, 10:30am PST

I love watching people shop late on a Christmas eve. There’s a crazed desperation in the eyes of the last-minute shoppers, especially those lazy guys who have left buying their sweethearts that amazing, thoughtful gift. Fortunately, it’s possible to buy a useful and thoughtful last-minute for the geek that still needs a gift.

Here are a few last-minute gift ideas that geeks will appreciate:

  • USB flash memory - The greater the capacity the better. There are also plenty of cheap drives that offer data encryption features too, which is a bonus.
  • Digital photo frame - Unless the recipient of the gift has a dozen of them, there’s always room for another photo frame.
  • Caffinated soap/body wash - At first I was skeptical that this could deliver any sort of kick, but it does. A favorite among programmers!
  • Screen cleaners - As a geek you can never have have enough wipes.
  • CD/DVD cleaner disc -  Yes, still relevant today!
  • Rechargeable batteries - Especially AAs for portable gadgets.
  • Emergency charger for cell phone - There are good ones that run off AAs and a no brainer as long as you know what cellphone your geek has (there are also universal chargers).
  • LED flashlights - Lots and lots of good ones. Surefire is a premium brand, Fenix is a lower-priced but solid alternative.
  • Pocket tool - Always handy. Swiss-Tech is a good brand to look for.
  • Any kind of radio controlled toy - There are hundreds to choose from, and always a hit.

Another cool one is "There are only 10 types of people; those who understand binary and those who don't"

Steam

A game off of Steam will usually go over well and you don't have to break the bank for most of them.

Your giftee doesn't even have to have a Steam account yet. I'm getting a lot of my friends Left 4 Dead to get them in the Christmas spirit.

Meh. I still have to leave the house for these. If you're
interested in giving truly last minute gift cards without
being forced to push and shove in the crowded malls, I
recommend the website that my work was using for holiday
gifting this year -- Www.giftzip.com .. the website offers
eGift cards that can be printed or sent virtually, reducing
that carbon footprint in the process. It has over 300
retailers and is extremely easy to use. No Charge. The
ultimate in last minute gifting.

Straight Talk Cell phone
Pat Ustice Updated - 23rd Dec 2009
Some nice ideas, some a little cheap for family but clever. I suggest a cell phone as a good idea as well, you can get a prepaid Straight Talk phone from Walmart which is good quality and will save money. They have two monthly options - $30 for 1000 minutes, 1000 texts/mms and 30mb of data plus free 411 calls. Or there is the $45 per month plan for unlimited everything. But the great part is that it runs on Verizon's network nationwide.

On the premium end of flashlights, I'd recommend looking into the Icon Rogue 2. The Surefire is an awesome light (much more of a tactical use light), but the batteries most Surefires use are 123A. As any techie knows, these batteries can be rather pricey. The Rogue uses regular, everyday, AA batteries and from all the testing photos I've seen on it, it puts out just as much light as the Surefire (Not to mention you can get the Rogue in a really cool, bright neon green color). Prices I've seen on it average around $40-$50 U.S.
