Linux open source drivers for Xbox Kinect released
Summary: It didn't take long for the hacking community to come up with open source drivers for the Kinect ... no Xbox required!

Adafruit offered a $3,000 bounty for open source Kinect drivers, and it's been won by a clever hacker called Hector Martin (@marcan42). The open source driver supports the RGB camera output and depth camera.
Well done Hector!!!

True but someone put up 3k for someone to reverse it..
So pay about 150 and make 3k from it..
Microsoft won't really be laughing, they sell the hardware at a lost. They make there money from the titles.. Unless that linux user has a xbox.. Microsoft is actually losing money from this..
RE: Linux open source drivers for Xbox Kinect released
No, they already said they make a small profit on every Kinect unit sold, right from the launch.
Then why object to more Kinect sales?
Why object to an Open Source driver if every extra Kinect sale that it generates is unexpected profit? That makes no sense.

dupe
not usually up for troll feeding but...
Open source drivers would help the Windows community as well - OSS != Linux.
Also, the thing about the Kinect is that it's a single, widely available, standardized audio/video/motion sensor. It makes much more sense to develop applications for that as opposed to having everyone's software have to support a myriad of other sensor permutations.

Linux fanbois have trouble with maths. Linux usage is now in the downslope. Down to 0.8% desktop (and I think this would be for desktop - right?). Not really going to have much of an impact, considering the majority of Linux users wouldn't be seen dead purchasing an MS product - they'd have to turn in their badge ;-)
Now some open source Windows drivers and a proper API - that would be nice. I imagine MS will have a PC API out in a while anyway.

So how much of the hardware is being driven?
That's obviously been enough to claim the bounty, but are there any other hardware features on this device that aren't (yet) available?

Btw, this is just great to everyone, but Microsoft will release very soon official drivers for Windows. Its just a question of time.
