The Google TV update that no one will care about

The Google TV update that no one will care about

Summary: Good changes, but it's a shame that Google TV is dead in the water.

Google pushes a lot of new software and updates out of the door. Yesterday the company announced that it was getting ready to push out an update to Google TV devices ... and update that no one will care about.

The Google TV update will revamp several areas of the Google TV experience, including:

  • Smoother navigation
  • New channel pages
  • See related videos
  • Info screen

Great updates. Problem is, Google TV is pretty much dead in the water and no one will care about this update.

Logitech's Revue Google TV died on the vine, and while there are new players jumping on board the Google TV bandwagon (LG, Samsung and Vizio), but I really don't see what secret sauce these companies have that will give them the edge over Logitech's dismal failure. TVs are a highly competitive market and the big names are losing money hand over fist, and consumers don't seem to be interested in 'feature' TVs.

If they have the contracts in place to have this software on 60% of all Smart Televisions, why do you think it is Dead?

Crud man, if Apple's TV hits they will be looking for Google to partner with anyway.

Even if the features are on the TV, you have to engage the audience to actually use them. Not just for the first week but as part of their regular habits. And that is HARD!

@Peter Perry : Oh. I don't think Apple will partner with Google on anything [new] any time soon. They are at their throats with legal issues from the phone divisions.

Its better that TVs are just dump devices and let it do what it does best now and let the devices that connect to the TV do the future stuff... The next Xbox will be exiting, and will definitly include a DVR function...would be intersting to see what the next PS3 (PS3.next) can do...

    • High cost item

[ul][i]Its better that TVs are just dump devices[/i][/ul]Agreed. The biggest cost item in a TV is the display. It makes zero sense to bundle a 40 or 50-inch LED display that will last a good ten years with a bunch of fast-moving, rapidly obsolete electronics. Keep that stuff off to the side, so people can change it five times during the life of the "TV".

Of course, the TV makers would love it if you changed TV screens every few years, hence the HD thing, then 3D, now this. There is zero money in making basic TVs anymore, so they all want a premium feature.

@Robert Hahn : We'll assume TVs last that long!

  • Waste of development.....

Who'd want to buy a product knowing that Google will probably shelve in a couple years time because nobody bought the damn thing. looks like this could turn into another Chromebook mess [reminder that even RIM's Playbook sold more than all Chromebooks combined].
Google has a history of dumping products. They dumped two social media networks before Google+ and even Google+ isn't doing that well [how long will they keep that up]. They are so desparate that if you create a Google account [for YouTube for example], automatically it will create an account in Gmail and Google+ for you - without asking.

Google has been ahead of most things, with a vision of the future most of us have not glimpsed. If we think not about the TV part of it, but rather at the large screen info/entertainment display thing we all will still have hanging on our walls in 10,20,30 years, then anything that improves that experience will be significant.

If it were a poll, I'd vote not dead.

  • Wow It's now October ...

and I'm wishing that my TV was Googlified. Instead I have to put up with multiple crap boxes using up plug sockets, electricity and only half achieving what I really want!

boxes come and go but the screen is always with us.

So why not make it as useful as possible.
