The folks at Neowin claim to have managed to get their hands on the internal schedule for the release of XP SP3.

Here's the roadmap that the release according to Neowin:

  • April 14: Support becomes available for XP SP3
  • April 21: OEMs, volume license, Connect, MSDN and TechNet subscribers get SP3
  • April 29: SP3 available via Microsoft Update, Windows Update and Download Center
  • June 10: SP3 available via Automatic Update

Is this correct? Only time will tell ... I've heard dates all across the board so I'm not betting the farm on anything.

Thoughts?

Guess I must be doing something wrong. I downloaded and installed SP3 a while back.

No, you didn't do anything wrong. What you have is a Release Candidate (RC #1) that was published back in December, if I remember correctly. Supposedly that Build has a Time Bomb that expires on June 30, 2008. To avoid disabling your system, you will have to uninstall Build 3264 and then install the actual Release To Manufacturer (RTM) build. The latest Release Candidate (RC #2 Refresh) I have seen is Build 5508 with files dated March 20 & 21, 2008.
