ZOMG! iPad 2 discontinued at Target! What could this mean?

Summary: Target marks the iPad 2 as discontinued, that must mean the iPad 3 is inbound, right? Wrong!

It seems that every little tidbit of news related to Apple is amplified, magnified and distorted beyond all recognition by the blogospheric echo chamber.

Take this piece over on TiPb which says that Target has marked the 16GB iPad 2 3G on both Verizon and AT&T as being discontinued. This, of course, must mean that the iPad 2 is not long for this world and that the iPad 3 is inbound.

Here's what the 'source' has to say:

That implies that we will not be ordering more, which implies a new iPad is forthcoming rather soon (October-ish, say). Either that or Target's exiting the iPad business, which seems unlikely. A lot of the cases have gone clearance too.

So, the iPad 2 is not long for this world then, right?

Maybe not ...

What's interesting is that Target only has the 3G models marked as discontinued, with the WiFi-only models still in stock. What's more likely than Apple getting ready to pull the plug on the iPad 2 and launch the iPad 3 is that Target is going to stop selling 3G iPads and stock only the WiFi models.

This 'iPad 3 is coming this fall' is nonsense. It was nonsense kicked off by John Gruber over on Daring Fireball back before the iPad 2 was officially announced. Want a laugh? Here's the reason that Gruber gave for predicting an early release for the ipad 3:

HP today announced their answer to the iPad: the TouchPad - a name that, not coincidentally, is drawn from those of two best-selling iOS devices. The hardware is very iPad-like - similar dimensions, similar basic gist. The software looks impressive: tasteful and well-designed, with a gesture-based interaction model. Way more appealing, and more cohesive, than what we've seen of Motorola's Android-based Xoom.

So it was the HP TouchPad that was going to shock Apple into releasing two iPad versions within the space of a year ... yeah, the now-dead TouchPad! Are you laughing? I'm laughing hard here, so hard I feel like I'm going to burst.

But there's more ... with hindsight these comment are also laughable:

The RIM Playbook looks genuinely interesting, and, supposedly, is coming soon-ish.

Given that Gruber was so way off when it came to the HP TouchPad (dead) and RIM's PlayBook (on life support after having only shipped - not sold - 200,000 over the last quarter), what's to say that he isn't just as way off with his iPad 3 prediction? I've already said that the iPad 3 (or iPad HD as some are calling it) isn't coming this year, but people still refuse to accept this (or maybe they're just churning the same nonsense because there's nothing else to talk about).

There's absolutely no reason for Apple to release another iPad this year. The competition is in disarray and the iPad is wiping the floor with the competition.

  • See now everything you said maybe true. Still

because the truth in this case paints a very good picture for Apple you will be called part if the Zdnet cabal that gushes over everything Apple:). Sorry about that and I have noticed you write your fair share of negative stuff about Apple and it's practices myself. That matters little however one compliment can ruin a years worth of slams to some.

Pagan jim

    • Yet I've noticed that in regards to Apple products

      @James Quinn
discussed here on ZDnet that one complaint from a blogger about the iPad or iPhone can ruin a years worth of praise to some.

@William Farrell And vice-versa. There are annoying fanboys on both sides.

This started off as an interesting article about the iPad and then turned into a childish attack on John Gruber. Looks like someone's carrying a grudge.

@Andre Richards ...and the worthless comments ever fail to appear!

I for one, think the autor here has a good point and even better analysis of the news regarding Target and the iPad.

@Bay Area CA Male: I agree with you, but only in regard to the first half of the article which is what bothered me. The second half was... I don't know what. Some kind of grudge match or something? It went from a really interesting look at what's going on with Target's iPad stock to a neener-neener at John Gruber. If you think pointing that out is a "worthless comment," then you're wrong. The second half of the article is some kind of veiled sucker punch directed at John Gruber that is only tangentially related to Target and the iPad.

I suspect this is either that or link bait. Gruber has such a big audience and he tends to link to articles that criticize him, so the author is probably hoping for a little traffic from that. It just seems childish and unprofessional.

@ Andre Richards: I believe that Bay area CA Male was reffering to the alway's debate about my "OS is better than your OS" type of endless chatter that always prevails, and sometimes to the point that it takes away the meaning and valid points from the authors and their articles...

However, I could also be wrong, but that was my take...

@AdnanPirota And we all know that you hate anything and everything Apple, so your comment unfortunately is just a waste of space.

    To add to the conspiracy...

Microcenter are selling the iPad 2 with $50 discount at their B&M stores.

  • Touchpad =/= iPad + iPod Touch

"HP today announced their answer to the iPad: the TouchPad - a name that, not coincidentally, is drawn from those of two best-selling iOS devices"

Did Gruber ever hear of the iPaq?
    dazzlingd
    • Guess not. seems everything has to be "Apple related"

      @dazzlingd
even though the name "Touchpad" has been used for that on laptops and outher devices since the 1990's, he makes the connection that the names are dirived straight from 2 Apple products.

    • RE: ZOMG! iPad 2 discontinued at Target! What could this mean?

@dazzlingd: Oh for god's sake, you'd seriously argue that HP wasn't intentionally employing the terms "touch" and "pad" in a tablet product because of the well-known association of those words with similar, successful products? You've clearly never worked with marketing people.

BTW, the iPaq was unveiled in 2000, the iMac in 1998. You do the math.

  • Gruber sounds like the desparate hournalist...

... who makes absurd predictions in his effort to make a name for himself should his outrageous predictions come true!

  • 'Tidbit of news'? There is no news about Apple, only rumours --

    hence the non-stoppable nonsense.

  • RE: ZOMG! iPad 2 discontinued at Target! What could this mean?

I may be wrong but I see more WiFi models are selling at all stores than 3G models. I have seen here in at 4 Best Buys at least having more 3G models in racks than WiFi. Interestingly those 3G models are more of Verizon models AT&T that are staying the racks.

@Rama.NET I agree with you on this. I've noticed the same. I would have to believe that most of all IPads are sold are the wifi models only, from the 16-32 gb models at least. I'm not sure about the 64gb ones though. I mean if you're going to spend that much, might as well spend the extra $$ for 3G also, IMHO.....
