DirecTV launches whole-home DVR service for $3 per month

Summary: Those of us who can't watch a show they recorded on their downstairs DVR when they're going to bed upstairs later now have reason to be a little more jealous of DirecTV customers. Those of us who can't watch a show they recorded on their downstairs DVR when they're going to bed upstairs later now have reason to be a little more jealous of DirecTV customers. That's because the satellite TV provider is now offering whole-home DVR service for a fairly modest $3 monthly charge.

The new service lets you record a pair of shows while you're watching two other ones, and for McMansion-owning TV hoarders, you can watch a show in up to 15 different rooms. Of course, you can do the things you expect from a whole-home DVR, like pausing a show in one room and resuming watching in another one, or being able to record a show from any TV.

In addition to paying the monthly $3 fee, you do need to pay for HD access ($10 per month) and DVR service ($7 per month), but you probably already have that unless you're on a tight budget. (It's similarly priced as the Verizon FiOS Home Media DVR for $19.95 per month.) I'd pay three bucks per month for this service in my own home if my cable provider offered it—would you?

  • DirecTv always behind the times

Dish Network has had this service for quite a while and it's free. You guys at C-Net are always behind the times.

    • Explain what you are talking about...

If possible give us more info/details on Dish's equipment, features, cost, etc. And a link to the page on their web site with their offering.

      TIA

      @mickeyl@...

Dish doesn't quite have a whole home DVR. They have a two -room DVR. Dish's solution allows you to have a DVR on one main TV in one room then playback or watch a different show in SD only to another TV in another room. Dish's solution is nicer for those with SD TV sets in a second room because unlike DirectTV's solution, it does not require a set top box on the second TV.

However, Dish's solution is NOT a whole house DVR unless your whole house has two TV's.

DirectTV is STILL late to the party, because AT&T U-verse has had a whole house DVR for years now. Like DirectTV's DVR, it requires a set top box on each set. There are other limitations to it, as well. But, DirectTV isn't the first to the party, as the headline implies.

  • Have it for free with U-Verse

U-Verse has had this for close to a year in my area.

I have this service with DirecTV, and I upgraded one of my DVRs to the new HR24 in order to get the rest of it basically installed for free. I have 5 systems, so in order to connect everything together the installer needed two drops and two ports on my router. Now the kids are streaming HD video through my router from one end of the house to the other, and I'm thinking of yanking it off the Internet and giving it it's own hub...

  • Tivo also offers this service

For less, although it's a wash when you include the cost of the equipment.

Looks like the Dish cost is $3 monthly + $7 DVR fee +$10 HD fee for a total of $20 a month. 36 months of service will run you $720.

Tivo Premiere (HD) is $12.95 a month per box, or $10.75/mo if you prepay 1 year or 8.30/mo if you prepay 3 years.

In addition, you have to buy the Tivo box itself. The Premiere is $300, or $8.33 a month. $8.33 for service + $8.33 for the box = $16.66 or 599.76 for 36 months.

If you keep the Tivo equipment longer than 36 months, subtract $8.33 per month for the box itself.

  • They are all crooks

They just keep charging and charging. HD should be standard now and shouldn't be charged for it. The boxes should only be charged for them until they are paid for. If I have a cable box and been charged $7 for it for 10 years thats alot more than that box is worth. They are all the same from Verizon to Dish/Directv to Comcast. And they wonder why people try and steal cable.

  • Direct TV lies. It's not as cheap as the ads claim

We have all the equipment listed in the Direct TV Whole Home DVR fine print.
We called last week, excited to get this new service. They told us it would cost $169 in new equipment and "installation" fees. Even though we install it ourselves.
We were not happy and did not sign up.
Called again today and got a new rep who offered it to us for $109.
    What's going on Direct TV???
Maybe it's time to make that UVerse switch. They've been knocking on our doors...

I also agree with cashxxx- they shouldn't be allowed to charge for boxes once they've recouped the costs through monthly fees.

@rd522 How many receivers were you getting for that price? I read it too and seems like its $169 per HD receiver per room, with the one DVR-HD discounted for the promo.
That still adds up to $600 for 3 rooms? Am i wrong on these charges?

  • RE: DirecTV launches whole-home DVR service for $3 per month

I may only have 2 TV's, but with DishNetwork I can record 2 shows while watching something recorded (haven't tried watching 2 recorded shows while recording), all with 1 box. There isn't a receiver for every TV. Plus, my sister-in-law has DirecTV with similar programming, so I've compared a lot of things, and I'll stick with Dish. Much better setup, IMHO...

If someone needs that much TV then obviously they don't have a life.

@swcook6 - I would tend to agree, but I can record 6 tuners worth of shows and 3 hour sporting events take me 15 minutes to watch each, so 18 hours of TV takes only an hour and a half of TV watching a day...

  • DirectTV DVR service

I have been appalled with the prices and quality I have seen for DVR service through Direct TV. Not only do they not have dual receiver technology but they charge $99.00 per room since their receiver is only capable of supporting one TV. This can get very expensive if you need multiple rooms connected. I happen to work for DISH network but I have been a customer long before I joined the DISH team. I have one DVR for the two rooms I need service in and I don't pay extra for the second room. I can also pause and rewind live TV therefore I don't remember the last time I had to watch a commercial. Honestly, I have been so happy with my DVR and the all the special features available that I would never give up those features for technology that is less than par.
