The next step in personal viewing is coming, and it's a lot more immersive than staring down at a portable DVD player or your tablet. Sony is bringing its HMZ-T1 "Personal 3D Viewer" to the States in November, and the company hopes you won't mind geeking out with a image viewer you wear around your head.
The HMZ-T1 features a pair of 0.7-inch OLED panels that provide the equivalent experience of viewing a 150-inch screen from a distance of 12 feet. It beams a separate image to each panel, so that 3D images suffer less from crosstalk. Since it wraps around your ears as well, Sony has built in virtual 5.1 channel surround sound for audio.
The 15-ounce viewer connects via a cable to a box with an HDMI output, and includes a switch to toggle between the viewer and an HDTV for watching content.
Gamers are a particular target audience for the HMZ-T1, which is probably smart since some of them will have the expendable income necessary to purchase the device. The viewing device will cost a cool $799 when it becomes available. But you will look like you're in a sci-fi movie.
