Bangalore based EC Media has launched India's first ebook reader, Wink. The ebook reader has been launched along with an ebook store for users to purchase books from. EC Media plans several models with different specifications available at various price points.

Wink XTS priced at Rs. 11,490 is the first model available for pre-order and will be shipped starting September. EC Media says they support 15 native languages for now. Feature wise Wink is powerful, audio playback, e-ink display and offers wireless connectivity, both GSM and WiFi based. Technical specifications of the Wink XTS are:

  • 16-Level Gray Scale, 800 x 600 pixels, 6" e-ink display
  • Powerful 400MHz ARM9 processor
  • Wireless: 802.11 b/g, GPRS with Quad Band Support (850, 900, 1800 & 1900)
  • 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack
  • Micro-SIM card slot (you can cut the normal SIM cards.)
  • USB 2.0
  • SD expandable up to 16 GB
  • Onboard Storage: 2GB

Running on a custom version of Linux, Wink has a claimed battery life of 10 hours audio playback (MP3 & AAC only) or 8000 page turns. The good thing is that Wink can be charged over USB as well and not just a wall charger.

For books, EC Media says they have Oxford University, Penguin, Harper Collins and Permanent Black on board. A Wink Store with around 200,000 titles (currently 197,606) has been launched where books can be downloaded from, there are some free ebooks available too. The different formats supported by Wink are:

TTXT, RTF, PDF, DOC, HTML, WOLF, CHM, FB2, DJVU

One of the more interesting services that EC Media plans to launch is the WinkWire which is an e-newspaper with both regional and international news papers, magazines and journals. Probably, Indian publishers won’t have to struggle too hard to survive.

Weighing in at 260 grams I really like what I see. You can pre-order your Wink online or head over to the closest Croma outlet to get a hands-on.

  • Pricing and performance

... I think pricing and performance are key for its success, considering the new cheaper, faster Kindle. What's its price in $s? Also, if the Kindle is not distributed in India, or does not have hindu characters, that is an opening for this reader.

      @Roque Mocan
It is approximately $248 which is really high. And considering the price conscious Indian market, I don't know how many will go for this.

  • The price of the eBookreader as well as the eBooks are both too high

This eBook reader will fail because only a person who has never heard about the Kindle 3 or Sony Ereaders will buy it. Even after shipping and customs, the Kindle 3 is much cheaper than this device. And this device doesn't even come close to Kindle 3 in terms of features (much better contrast and WiFi connectivity in Kindle 3) . I can only speculate about the build quality because I have never seen the wink in person, but I sure can bet it is not better than the Kindle.

One more very important point to note is that eBooks available at thewinkstore.com is much much costlier than the actual paper books. e.g., the book,"The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest " by Stieg Larsson is available for Rs. 245/- at flipkart.com (they are an online store for actual paper books) while the same has to be bought for Rs. 714/- at the wink store, even though the eBooks are supposed to be cheaper buy 15-20% than the paper copy because of the decreased paper cost.

Wink is not the first E-Book reader, rather Infibeam had come up with India's first E-book reader and that too a year back.
    It was named as Pi.

If you buy Kindle 3 (latest generation) wifi+ shipping and handling + Tax and import duty, it costs US $ 273.25 from India( today's ICICI conversation is Rs. 11990. I think it will be nearly same as wink will be after tax and shipping. May be more. If you compare kindle is much more than wink in many aspects. I would buy Kindle through Amazon.com. They will take care of shipping and duty fee etc, for you. Yes, you may have to pay little for currency conversion to your visa or mastercard credit card or to ATM, ask your bank.

KIndle3 is just the best and i have been using it for the last 6 months and just enjoy it. So far after seeing me use the Kindle around 5 of them got it from TOI (Times of India).Ebooks are not costly, it is a myth as there are many sites which offer the latest novel as a freedownload. I would really appreciate if people who do not own a kindle to stop feeding false information on this site. Kindle is better than other users because it uses e ink which gives u the feel of reading straight from the book not any backlit reader like the others.
Finally......blindly get one if u cud.....! you would never regret...:))

dfgdsfgNow, if the daughter had her contacts stored in her Mac's Address Book or on the MobileMe cloud, there's just no need for her to reenter those manually and I strongly doubt that the Genius employee would have suggested it. Thankfully the iPhone/iTunes sync features give this extra level of redundancy, but you have those sync features turned on, and you have plug your phone into your computer once in a while.
