CNET Labs testing shows: 80GB iPod has double battery life of Zune 80

My colleague Donald Bell, who writes for CNET's Crave blog, comes to us with results of a CNET Labs battery life comparison between the Zune 80's audio-only battery and the corresponding power plant of the 80GB iPod Classic.

Our labs obtained this info via battery drains. Labs can do that sort of thing, you know.

If you're a Zune fan, the results can only mean one thing. Better take along your charger.

Why?

80 GB iPod classic= 45 hours of battery life. Zune 80=22 hours of battery life with Wi-Fi sharing (which to my amazement, no one seems to give a rip about) disabled.

Zune 80- 18.5 hours of battery life with Wi-Fi sharing enabled.

Hey Microsoft, that's kind of slack.

  • Battery life

Not that important- audio quality is paramount for music.
iPod is reputedly poor in this respect?

Your picture is the old iPod, not the classic. I know they aren't much different but this is a trick often used by people trying to show the Zune in a better light. Shame about the useless battery!

  • drain due to...?

maybe the drain is due to the larger screen? or maybe it's just a crappy battery. probably both.

  • Didn't they promised 30 hours?

Microsoft claimed from their own test that Zune would offer 30 hours Audio but it's really 22 (and 18.5 with WIFI on).

Apple claimed the iPod would offer 30 hours Audio from their own test but CNET found that to be 45 hours. I think Apple tends to be too modest at times ;-)

The Zune is still a better product. Battery life does not a great MP3 player make.

It means that I must charge my Zune at least once every 2 days. I think I can handle that
