Yesterday I blogged about the case of reader dmuniz, who wrote to tell me that his Packet8 phone number was mistakenly assigned to Vonage- even though he is not, and never has been a Vonage customer.

Just a few mins. ago I got this update from the same dmuniz:

Yesterday I handed the whole thing over to my attorneys. They contacted both Vonage and Packet8. They were able to get more information from Vonage than me, but also got a different explanation of what happened from Vonage than the one I got from Packet8.

Packet8 now wants me to contact the actual company that received my phone#. I have to ask them to give it back to me(?). I also have to get a copy of the authorization from them to port my number to them(?).

What a mess. I'll keep you posted.

  • packet8 woes

after my own bad experience with packet8 i stumbled upon your blog and this post on the Vonage number blunder. in may case, packet8 charged me a disconnection fee of $59.99 for a number that i was never able to activate as a result of inconvenient customer service and inaccurate instructions in their own materials. This is all despite a 30-day cancellation policy. But because they consider the start date from the time you initiate service rather then when the account is active and the number you chose is activated it is murky and frankly a bit deceptive. BBB lists them with an "unsatisfactory record" and I was very surprised to learn from your blog that they are the second largest VoIP company. i hope the gentleman has better luck with them then i did.
